Star Trek XI (The Spoilery Thread!)

I would've liked it more had they done one very simple thing: not reuse the names of the crew, and just say it's a completely different crew on whatever ship they wanted.

New people still would've watched it given the advertising, old people still would've just because it's sci-fi/star trek -- only they could've avoided the entire time-travel alternate universe thing altogether which as been overdone so much that people cringe when they hear "time tr..." because they know what's coming next.

Really... as soon as they blew up vulcan -- the entire Star Trek line of shows/movies has just been invalidated (as few/none of it would've happened as none would've been born and entire civilizations would be taken over/collapsed) - and completely disregards things put into the canon about things as well (the time agency meant to go back and clean up the messes in time of events not meant to happen: ex: voyager and the entire "please stop time travel already!" thing).

I know, that's what I don't get. I'm young and I'm a fan. People say the franchise isn't attracting younger people, but I know plenty of young people that enjoy it. If the crew behind "Enterprise" would have written that show better, things might have been different and no one would have to make a movie that disregarded currently established canon...Why erase forty years of canon to attract new fans? It's sort of annoying.

Eh, I liked the movie. Really, I did. I just have a few issues with it.

I'm sure I'm going to get some raised eyebrows when I say this but...

POOR PORTHOS!!!!! But I do like the fact that they at least acknowledged Archer.

Not going back and saving the timeline - well, now we can throw EVERYTHING from TOS, TNG, DS9, and even VOY out the window and forget they even happened - this opens the door up to make Star Trek completely new from the beginning - which could pave the way for another series.

I think they did a great job with the cast, too.

I like the fact that it could lead to a new series and I hope it does...it's just that I'm such a huge fan of TNG and even VOY and DS9. Uggh, I just hate timetravel.

Long standing fan here, and I love the time rewrite. Plenty of younger people may like it, but no enough, mainly because the star trek fanbase has an (undeserved) reputation as nerdy, obsessive unwashed social misfits. Part of that is the MASSIVE amounts of back story, which can be confusing to all but the most dedicated.

The franchise- and it is a franchise- badly needed fresh air and rejuvenating. This could be just the ticket, and we could get new series, with the nostalgia value of well known and loved characters, and (hopefully) the mistakes learned from the previous series.

(TNG could be WAY too worthy at times, Voyager could be downright depressing, DS9 got way too confusing and bogged down and politics and lets not even talk about Enterprise)
And no, we don't have to ignore what happened in previous series- thats the beauty of an alternate universe scenario. It all still happened, just not in THIS timeline...

That... was... incredible.

I... I loved it. It was perfect, save for Chekov and Sulu, who I really didn't care for. Winona was so right as Amanda. Spock... and Kirk... and McCoy... and SCOTTY! He should have had more screen time, because he was hilarious. Absolutely hysterical. I did NOT care for Uhura's being demoted to Main Character Love Interest, though. I'd be more annoyed it if was Mr. Nimoy, of course. I was SO glad he had a larger role. They did the AU thing very well.

The opening scene where Jim's father is talking to his wife? I teared up. It was touching. It was BEAUTIFUL. If they make a new series for this show, I'll watch it. They MUST have this crew, though. Any changes would be a travesty.

I think the most "OMG, It's Star Trek Again" moment is when Jim says to Spock "We're getting to know each other" and smacks his arm. Spock gets that Blue Screen Of Death expression, and my world seemed whole again.

But I cant' believe they killed Amanda! His MOMMY! That showed his human side right there. You do NOT insult Spock's mommy.

I liked the story and a lot of the characters.

That said, I wish I had NOT gone to the theater. The cinematography for enough of the scenes left me with a headache with the BSG-inspired amateur-cameramen-with-DT-shakes type shots. Like the slightly-out-of-frame shaky close-ups and Spock in the Vulcan science ship.

Spock and McCoy were bang-on. The transport scene onto the Enterprise was a riot. Would have to see how they develop Kirk a bit more. Sulu wasn't too bad, but Chekov was a bit over the top with the accent.

I had such a crush on him when I was a little kid and watched the OST for the first time.

Scotty! He was spot on, along with Bones. I loved every scene they were in and wish Scotty had more screen time.

Oh, and the whole marooning Kirk thing makes logical sense... Kirk has already attempted escape from arrest once... he's obviously a very intelligent person... there's a risk he'll escape from the brig... only way to make sure he doesn't escape the brig and try to mutiny again is to get him off the ship.

Also, while Spock did maroon his First Officer, he did not officially strip him of his title, and unless someone wanted to call out Kirk, who, let's face it, was volunteering to fill a set of shoes that intimidated the hell out of everyone else, he could reasonably get away with it.

I'm not a military man, never have been, but I just don't see that as reasonable. Whether or not Kirk was stripped of his title and rank, he was still put under arrest by Acting Captain Spock. Also, the fact that no officer on the bridge had the cajones to step up and fill the role that needed to be filled bothers me. Where are these people from, Mouseland? Aren't they (allegedly) Starfleet officers? Hell, Dr. Beverly Crusher could have taught most of these "officers" a thing or two about command! And seriously, can I honestly believer that Kirk is the only officer with ambition on the whole ship?

But let's forget about who wanted the captaincy or not. You still would think there would be protocol in place to deal with rank succession, and that there would have been a third in command who would have assumed control, one would hope admirably.

We can argue about whether or not it is logical--I don't think it is--but let's put that aside for a moment. Do you honestly think that such a maneuver is withing Starfleet regulations or protocol? I am guessing not...which, as I have said, puts Spock afoul of both, something that is out of character for the logical commander.

It's Star Trek logic, which means anything that gets the story moving in the right direction. Whether it's actually logical or not is irrelevant. Just has to SOUND good when no one's listening too closely.

A lot of things in the Star Trek universe are illogical. It's the logic of "Okay, it's Friday, let's get this thing written."

I have to say, as someone who's watched every movie, most of TOS (hey, I wasn't even a gleam in my daddy's eye then!), all of TNG, most of DS9 and Voyager, I really liked this one. Yeah, it had its odd moments. I thought Spock ejecting Kirk was comical, but a moment at the same time.

Still, I like the concept. They broke canon without actually breaking canon. Spock 'Prime', being Ambassador Spock as portrayed in TNG, hinting at the original timeline clear through Nemesis, is a nod to how things went before and I liked that aspect. The inadvertent time travel of the main villain and Spock altering history and creating an alternate timeline in essence creates a whole new slate, and opens the way for new adventures without having to worry about the baggage of 'well this is going to happen in X years so we've got to take that into account'. Now they truly are going where no one has gone before.

As for the new design of the Enterprise? Loved it. Absolutely loved it. Very well done, and provides a good 'updated' feel taking the far more advanced look of Enterprise (NX-01) when compared to TOS, and the smooth lines and touch panel styling of TNG to create a perfect in between tech appearance. In addition, I loved how they had Engineering and the Shuttle bays have a more 'industrial' look to them. Open ladder wells, beams, structures all around. What's the point of having fancy paneling down there anyways? I also loved the 'windshield' on the bridge.

Overall, two thumbs up from me.
