    Ew. <shudders>

I was picturing much worse, though.
Me too! Turns out I sliced pretty neatly across the nail, rather than through the nail and the fingertip. Which gives me a lot of nail to regrow, but probably less damage to nerves and muscle.

Funny thing: my mom the nurse is way more grossed out by it than I am!

      Yay! Finger condoms!

Hope you feel better, finger heals up somewhat and there is no infection to be had.

Nail injuries hurt a lot less if you keep them slathered with ointment and covered. Once the wound starts to dry out and harden, that's the real pain, til it's done. Can't speak for the rest but I'm inclined to say treat it the same way.

Draggar: I have no idea what happened to the bit that got cut off--I cleared the counter off really quickly when I cleaned up the blood, and it probably went into the garbage disposal. It should grow back though, I think I got more fingernail than anything else.

Amina: Thanks! When I checked it earlier, the skin was very clear, no red spots, no heat, no sign of infection, and I got a glob of Neosporin on it right afterwards. Between that and the finger condom, it looks pretty good. Helps that my kitchen knife was relatively clean and I rinsed the wound with water immediately.

I cut the tip of my thumb off once, didn't feel a thing, thats why I <3 sharp knives. They doo less surrounding area damage and hurt less.
Well, if you want to put a positive spin on it.

Heh. My priest commented on my ongoing Facebook status saga. He finds it amusing that I find this whole thing amusing. But it IS funny!

Well hey, if the knife is damned sharp, then it's much easier and less messy if you ever have to get anything sewn on.

Joi, I often find my own injuruies funny too, mainly beause my initial, natural reaction to pain is to laugh my arse of because of it, must have a few wires crossed in my brain for that to happen

hey, whether you laugh or cry, you're still injured--might as well laugh! Plus, it gives you some great stories! Oh, and the coworker gross-out potential? Amazing!

When I worked as a chef, on the basis of how many times i cut myself with the knives, I simply refused ever to use the meat cleaver, on the rare occasion that I had no choice, I'd look like I was fencing with it because I'd raise my other arm way above my head

When I ran a seafood dept we had a ringmail glove we used to protect our hand while cutting up the fish. The bones in some fish (larger salmon, halibut erc..) are the same size as finger bones - if your hands are cold you might not tell which one you cut off.

That glove saved my hand and fingers many times - so well I ordered extra gloves (and different sizes).

Oh... OW. I'm a big baby, and I would have been running screaming to the ER. You must have steel ovaries.

Hell yeah! I come from a long line of very tough Norwegian women. I didn't even take any painkillers till the next day.

Heh you need more to do. I would watch it though cuz I just had to get a tetanus shot cuz I tore my finger and half my nail off! We don't want you to get an infection and become the 9 fingered wonder.

Oh, I'm watching it very closely. I'm slathering it with antibiotic ointment every time I expose it to air, I washed it right after it got cut, and I have some amoxycilin (sp?) that I'm taking too. There's no heat or redness, so infection isn't likely.
