I'll be having dinner with my family, which is in the evening, so even if I still have to work this year, I'll be able to eat dinner at home. I seem to always work on Thursdays, so if the place is open on Thanksgiving, I know I'll be working until 2pm.

Finally got a chance to call the stepdracula and find out what's planned for Thanksgiving:

We're having it a week from Saturday, as the middle sis and her family are coming down that weekend (my niece has a ticket to go see the Hannah Montana concert that Sunday night, but I digress.)

I've volunteered to bring one of Mom's pound cakes (this has become a holiday tradition for the last several years) and I'm also going to do the dressing.

Other than that, my stepdracula (okay, stepmom) is planning for:

      Turkey
      dressing
      gravy
      rice
      green beans
      salad
      rolls
some kind of pie (she's not sure what kind yet)
      pound cake
      cranberry sauce

so basically nothing out of the ordinary . . . let's just hope she doesn't offer to come up with anything off the wall.

Husband and I will do Thanksgiving at our house this year for us and any of our friends that don't have anywhere else to go. Then on Friday, we'll take dinner to my Dad who is in a nursing home about 100 miles away.

I look forward to this meal all year long! It's my very favorite. When husband and I first got together, his father invited us to celebrate with him at the Wichita Mtns - they were doing turkey sandwiches!

Turkey & dressing (I need a good stuffing recipe if anyone has one. I've just been using the bag mixes which aren't very good.)
        Dumplings
Potato Salad - had a special request for
we usually do mashed potatoes, but probably won't this year since we're doing potato salad
        Sweet potatoes
Pies - pumpkin and pecan for sure. Maybe a cheesecake (I'm not a pie fan).

Right now I'm only planning on about 5 people, but I want to get a big enough turkey that we have room for anyone else who might show up. Maybe a ham.

Can't afford to go home this year, so I have to spend Thanksgiving alone. *sniff*

I'm sure the red velvet cake I'm planning to have will help....

I heard an ugly rumor that, because our delivery time is so far behind at work, they may take away one of our paid holidays and keep the plant open on Black Friday (but what that would mean for me would be getting Wednesday night off, and having to go back Thanksgiving night and work until 7 am Black Friday).

To me, I think it's bullshit and hope to gosh it's just a rumor. It makes no sense to just shut the factory down for 12 hours just because we are that far behind, and to take away a paid holiday that we have gotten off every year for how many years. And to give 1st and 2nd shift all of Thanksgiving Day off but not 3rd...sure, it'd only be an hour that day I'd be working but still, I'd have to not get any sleep to be able to eat with my family, or they'd have to move it to Wednesday or Friday so I could have it with them.

Since I'd be losing my holiday pay, I'd imagine if they tried to take it away, I could always call in sick like everyone else will.

I'm gonna be alone in Houston, since my family's all the way on the other side of the state, I have no money to go visit anyone and spend the holiday with them, and pretty much all my friends have moved away. I bought a small turkey breast roast, though, and plan on making a few sides (I'm thinking mashed potatoes or pureed butternut squash, gravy, dinner rolls, a salad and maybe green bean casserole). I might try my hand at a mini pumpkin cheesecake, too. We'll see how it ends up.

I'll be doing the same thing I do every year lately: make an awesome turkey and go to my best friend's house. There's a group of us, former roommates and their husbands, who have Thanksgiving together every year: Rachel makes the sides, I make the turkey and save the drippings, so Marcy's husband can make the gravy.

It works very well, and we have a fantastic time!

For those who are stuck without people on Thanksgiving:

My cousin was stuck alone a few years ago with one friend on Christmas. They went and volunteered at a homeless shelter that was serving a big dinner, so they got some food and weren't alone on the holiday. I also know several big cities have Thanksgiving meals that anyone can attend.

I hate being alone on holidays. I've always been lucky enough to have a friend adopt me for Thanksgiving. When I was in training in the Army, they even had families take us to their house for Thanksgiving. That was one of the nicest things anyone has done for me.

Well, it sounds like three of the five friends we invited have family they're getting together with, and the other two are both working on Thanksgiving Day. So, we're going to hold off on the big dinner and have it on the Sunday after Thanksgiving instead. My husband and I will probably just have a nice, quiet, relaxing evening on Thanksgiving itself. ^^

Mom just picked up my *giant* roasting pan and platter. I sent her home with 4 boxes of cake mix for cupcakes.

I also made plans at work to pick up 2 dozen frozen snickerdoodle cookies for my really really really awesome dessert thingy that I learned to make at the 'Q.

I hate thanksgiving with a passion....way too much food and I have a fairly big family, so its a rather hectic and long day (i get uncomfortable in crowds....even family crowds)....at least the following day is usually dead quiet in the office, we just dick around the interwebz....I think I'll need to add a few movies to the iPod.

Though I may actually be making a dish to bring this year...a vegan pumpkin chowder....I'll have to check with my mom to see if she still wants me to make it

Since I can't get up to my hometown this year, I'm taking my BF up on his offer of Thanksgiving with his extended family.
