I actually learned how to square dance in high school (early 2000's). And I went to an all girls school. The teacher rotated who got to be the "boy" and that girl had to wear a jersey over their gym uniform. I don't remember any of the steps.

In grade school (90's) we just played volleyball, softball, basketball and space invaders or dodgeball.

      What Irv said.

The Electric Slide was kinda fun, though.

I wish we could've done swing dancing.

I'm originally from Tennessee (includes all of my schooling years). I was homeschooled, though, so no square dancing for me, although I might have enjoyed it as I love to dance. Besides, I was on a mission to be as Southern as possible to annoy the crap out of my yankee mother. (Since then, I have renounced all things redneck.) Instead, I had my own workout routines at home, tennis lessons, and with other kids I had volleyball, basketball, frisbee, and swimming. Sucked at all of them except the swimming. My head is a magnet for basketballs. Since then I've been to various dance classes/workshops/parties where I've learned more and loved it!

You played video games in gym class?

I'm sure this is a physical activity of some sort, probably even a pretty fun one, so please to be explaining?

How come so many people got to learn polka in school? I have never used my line dancing again, and I keep having to get people to show me how to polka (yes, it's sad, but I keep going "it must be harder than that").

For me, it was because I was going to a WI school and polka is the state dance of WI.

Born and raised in TX, so we learned line dancing. Electric slide, Boot Scootin' Boogie and the Cotton Eyed Joe. Oh, and of course they taught us to two step, which to this day I still can't do correctly. Middle school sucks for a graceless klutz who can barely walk without tripping on her own two feet, and then requiring her to focus on rhythm and balance and dancing? TORTURE...
