In answer to those who mentioned computer screens (giving you headaches or staring at one all day at work, etc - not singling anyone out) - the technology for the e-books is different than a normal computer screen. They call it e-ink and it's more like reading from the newspaper. I find it quite easy to read from even with tired-I'm-about-to-fall-asleep eyes.
Oh, I know this. It's pretty cool.

It took me 4 years to realize I should be majoring in English Lit. Mostly because people told me an English degree was stupid. But I love to read. My mother actually has come into my bedroom and asked me if i ever get sick of reading because I will lay in bed all day with a pile of novels and just mainline them.

I worry a little about when we don't have dead tree books anymore. Mostly because you can't share digital copy of certain books. I like lending my friends my hardcovers and having them hand back to book telling me everything the loved. Though I don't love that my brother's bookshelf is full of most of my classics. He REFUSES to give them back.

I'll miss dead tree books if they go away. Mostly because of the hundred pound storage container filled with manga and graphic novels that I tend to take with me to anyplace I'll be longer than two weeks.

If I could borrow books to read on it like I do at the library with physical ones, I'd be sold.
My university library does this. They rent out the e-reader and the books. The file is encoded so it self-destructs off the e-readers hardrive after a few days. It's pretty nifty.

Reading newpaper too long makes me eyes hurt too. Stupid astigmatism.

That's cool. The display units of the nook at B&N do something similar. They can download stuff to it to show customers how it works, and each night it gets wiped out.

I LOVE books. I have tons. I have so many I don't know what to do with them. I love to re-read them too. I even fold pages on my favorite parts and go back and read them again. My hubbie was talking about a nook but I don't know there's just something nice about going to a book store and chillaxing while looking for a book.

I read on my lunch breaks or when I'm stuck waiting for my man to get off of work. They're awesome. I read them too fast though. If I get into a really good one (I try to get thick ones) I can finish them off in a few hours. Its getting harder and harder to find any good ones anymore though.

With an e-book, no matter what brand, can you highlight passages in the book? What I like the best is to be able to go into one of my library areas at home, pull out a book, leaf through it and find the passage I am looking for. Nothing to turn on or boot up.

You can on the nook. I haven't tried it on the kindle app yet.

You can bookmark pages, and the nook has a built in dictionary which I love. So far, the only sucky thing about the nook is the booting part, once it's one though, it moves pretty fast.

I'll never give up my books. I just love it when I find a (used) book I want, open it, and experience that old-book smell. Beaucoup bonus points if it smells like an old campfire.

Love to read too. Raised by readers, but neither of my brothers are big readers and my husband has never finished a book in his life. That's just crazy to me.

I've posted about this before, but there is a great website called www.paperbackswap.com. I tend to go into 1/2 price books and just pick up a dozen that look interesting and then swap the ones that don't warrant a another reading. If I like them I can read them over & over. That makes my dad nuts, but it's more of a calming thing for me.

I'm pretty hard on books, so I only do paperbacks. I don't think one of the electronic devices would stand up to me dropping them in the tub!
Is it really SO hard to listen to the prompts?

The bad news is that the Borders store near where I work is closing.

The good news is that everything is 30%-50% off and I got 6 books for $30 today.
I question my sanity every day. Sometimes it answers.

I think I'd die without my books! I love love love them! I am the proud owner of slightly over a thousand of them and I want more.

I'm currently reading Incubus Dreams -Laurell K. Hamilton and Coming Up for Air - George Orwell. I just finished the latest in the Nightside Series from Simon R. Green and am thinking of starting Angel Time by Ann Rice.

I always have a book I'm reading somewhere. In fact I took the Hamilton one with me today for some appointments. I'd rather read then play on my cell phone!

I'm always reading something. I'm usually in the middle of at least 3 books at any given time.

If I'm traveling, I use the ebook reader on my cellphone, but even then, I have a paperback book with me. Ebooks are more convenient for some things, but when the battery runs down.... I do like having the ability to carry a lot of books with me easily, though.

As for the Kindle/Nook/etc: they all have the same problem: they don't fit in my pocket. If I'm going to carry somethng separate, I'd rather have a real book.

This thread is renewing my desire to inventory my books. I may not be able to leave my living room (the only room with AC) this weekend, so it might be a good time to do it, since that's where the majority of my books are.
