  • Got on the scales - up to 17st 6lb. Ouch. Need to watch what I'm eating while I can't exercise.

    • 40 minute workout this morning.

17.5 on the bike for 255 calories burned, 22-ish minutes of full body resistance band strength training for 141 calories burned. total calories burned = 396. Not bad, considering the bulk of the workout was strength training.

Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to shower I go.

      • Can I join this group? I've been flapping my gums for a while now that I needed to lose weight and I just stepped on the scale yesterday and realized that I need to drop over 100 pounds....108 to be precise. I've got to get some of it off now. Hubby and I are talking about taking the kids to Disney World next summer and I refuse to have their memories be of mom making everyone slow down and having to wait on me and then me not being able to ride things with my kids because I can't fit. I'm not going to be that person and do that to my kids or myself.

I don't have an eating plan yet, I'm just starting, but I'm going to check out a couple of things today and hopefully will have something in order by the end of the week. For the time being I'll just try to control portion sizes and lay off the late night eating.

I also figure for the time being, I can recruit my girls to play Dance Dance Revolution with me for cardio work. If I can drop 30 pounds before Christmas then I'll tell the hubby I want an elliptical machine for Christmas this year. I have back issues apart from the weight, so I don't want anything high impact, and I hate riding a bike, so those are out.

        Any advice?

All are welcome. No restrictions, as long as you're prepared to keep going, take and offer support.

Plan is easy. Eat less crap. Eat moderate amounts of good stuff. Endure hunger.

I'm sure others can help better

Low impact stuff - swimming is always good (going to have to take that up myself), just walking is always useful. Hills are an effort, but they're great if you can keep doing it for ages. Downhill, as I found out to my cost, is somewhat impactful. For a proper cardio workout to be effective, it has to last at least tewnty minutes, and that should be the minimum.

          • Thanks for the advice!

So far "Eat less crap" is pretty much the plan. Well, that and cut out regular soda, which is pretty much crap. I figure on looking more into it and coming up with a little more detailed plan than that though.

Eating at work really isn't going to be that big of a problem because I have a fridge and micro, so I should be ok there.

One of the guys I work with used to box and was a body builder, so he gave me pretty good advice for snacks, too. I'm one pf those weird people who like rice cakes, so he suggested a rice cake with peanut butter in the afternoons since it's a good combo of protein and carbs, so I'm going to get those to keep at work.

            • 2 kinds of carbs: easy simple carbs aka white sugar and complex carbs aka brown rice.
Lately I've been drinking too much soda, so when I get a sweet tooth urge, I drink apple juice watered down. Or grab an apple.
I like apples - they are only 80 cal, and bulky enough and big enough to make you slow down to eat it (so you don't scarf and forget you ate something) and they fill you up with complex carbs and fiber.

I need to get some more tofu. It's bland enough for me atm where it's also a fat & protein food.

              • I'm still dealing with pain and stiffness in both knees. I haven't had a problem this severe since, well, probably when I first injured them in high school. I'm worried I'll have to go in for cortisone shots...which given my phobia of needles, will likely mean I'm out of commission for a day or so, since they'll have to dope me up first. Atavan and Valium and I do not get along. So either I'll have to wait till Saturday, or take a day off work.

Over the next few days I'm going to severely restrict my activity and see if that helps.

This weekend mom and I made Spanikopita, which I might try to do on my own. It's time-consuming, but it's low-fat and high-iron. So hopefully it's healthier than the crap I've been eating the last two weeks.

Been doing that myself. Knee brace most of the day for support. Knees are better, left is back to normal, but the right is playing funny buggers with clicking etc. It makes sure I know about stairs...

                  • *nods*

I have this really bad tendency of saying "oh no, I'm fine, I'm not hurting myself...

                    ...oops."

So I've asked everyone to make sure I'm not doing anything for the next few days. Other Half is going to drive me to work, I'm not allowed to lift any cases of wine, and I'm only taking the apartment stairs once a day. If I'm downstairs, I'm down until I finish everything. If I'm upstairs, I'm not going out again.

                    • I have definately found my maintaining weight I have only changed +-2 pounds in the past few months, so I know this is where I am going to be.

My diet has vastly imptoved (except this month, fairs and pumkpin foods, but its nothing terrible) and beside the SAD, I feel great. I have no desire to go back to the olds ways ( I avoided the free junky breakfast today, and will get a salad for lunch). I crave healthy foods and getting some exercise now. (Its weird, I drool at the site of fresh green veggie)

It can be done, and you can stick with it Its the sticking with it that miht be the trickiest

                      • I learned something new just recently. Never trust the monitors on the equipment, a stand alone heart-rate/calorie monitor is way more accurate. The stand alone monitor says 500 or so calories burned while the one mounted on my eliptical machine only read .4.

                        • Right knee is still about the same level - clicking and popping etc. Got a couple more weeks of light duties to go, but the atrophying of my leg muscles after the exercise bike runs apace. Sod. Going to look at taking a couple weeks off after the light duties to see if I can give them more chance, and on Wednesday I try my hand at swimming.

In the meantime, I picked up some hemp oil for those important omega3 acids from our free pallet at work. I've put a teaspoon on each of two weetabix in the morning, and would you believe that it tastes pretty disgusting?

                          • Back to the eating less thing again, and likely to be on the Wii Fit tonight on some different exercises. Probably hula hoops for a while - reckon that's going to be good as I can get right now.

17st 5lb this morning. Thighs are feeling really flabby now I'm off the bike for the moment.

                            • getting myself back into the gym swing - been kind of hard as i've been pulling 12 hour shifts latey *yawn*. Also gotten some pre-workout stuff to help with muscle recovery and what not. Tried it for the first time tonight - dunno if it was a placebo effect, but I did find that I went a bit harder with my workout than usual...
