It made me cry. Mostly for that last scene.
As for the prevention...we don't know what went on through Amy's head the past 36 years. We're given broad generalization (ie survival is paramount, don't trust the Doctor, still misses Rory), but no specifics. We know that she was told she would refuse the help later on. So I can see why it works, but it's hard to give the proper characterization in the 15-20 minutes they had for it.
