I worked mall security during the time of the Aurora theater shooting. Our mall also had a theater and we had an upswing in people attempting to open carry on the property. We'd quietly approach and make it clear that they were welcome to come to our mall but we were asking that they leave the gun at home or in the car; it was not a new policy (signs were up everywhere with mall policy), just one we'd never really had to enforce before. First they'd bitch it was public property and we had to explain that it was privately owned and open to the public as long as you followed the rules. They then bitched "I have a conceal carry permit so I'm exempt!" Umm, If you have a permit, why are you open carrying then? I myself have a carry permit and personally, if I could not SEE that they were carrying, we wouldn't have had to have the conversation (one guy had a tight under-armor shirt with a harness on underneath and the outline of his pistol was clearly visible, nothing left to the imagination!). We then noticed they were quietly filming with their phones as we talked to them, so we were nothing but professional and polite . One guy complained about his 'treatment' on some forum that one of my coworkers is also a member of! He got shut down real quick by other people pointing out that if he could conceal carry, do it!

Yea private property can post it. You have to respect it. Law very, and in some states the signs have power of law and you can be arrested for Ignoring them.
I carry and being most mall and theater chains ban it making it a prime spot to have a repeat performance of that shooting, I don't go to those places.
You can have your feel good rule and I can keep my live safe somewhere else. They wonder why ticket sales are down. Ok the movies suck and are way over priced prob has more to do with it.

Why open carry, yea let's not start that debate. There are many good reasons to.

...And, should you wish to do so, we even have a sister site and forum set up for exactly that purpose. How convenient

That should fill my passive-aggressiveness quota for the week...

And I had one guy insisting that an AR-15 that fired 3-round bursts didn't count as a machine gun.

If it does that, it's not a AR-15. It's an M16A2. Sure in the right state you have 6 months to wait and 20-30K burning a hole in your pocket you to can have one.

Yea even on gun sites that one gets lively. That's why I left it at that.
Or for real fun start a 9-vs-45 thread

Is getting in an argument about gun technicalities against the rules? FWIK, the M16/M4 is the military designation but the name of the platform is still the AR-15.

TheShadow - Thank you for asking I was referring more to the open vs closed carry thing, and just heading things off at the pass.

For specifics: Identifying the gun itself is fine -- I am aware that the media reports dun fooked up in that regard. Going back and forth regarding the legality of the guns, and interpretation of the laws, not so much. Rule of thumb: If it's about what IS, it's generally fine on CS (but see below). If it's about what SHOULD BE, it goes on Fratching.

If in even the slightest doubt, ask a mod -- That's what we're here for (I usually check in 3-4x a day even on weekends, so feel free to drop me a line). You'll never get in trouble for PMing us a question like that, even if the answer is "Holy shit, dude, that's absolutely a Fratching topic o_O" -- We take action when something problematic actually gets posted.

Arguments and debates in general are against the rules here; they fall under the aegis of "contentious" material, along with politics, religion, whether or not to tip, etc. -- simply because 99% of them will lead to people getting pissed off at one another, and generally acting uncivilized. That's why we created our sister site, www.fratching.com -- Where healthy debates are actively encouraged, just as long as they don't devolve into flames and personal attacks.

As an example: Let's say you're over on Fratching and you see a post you fervently disagree with. If you respond with "That doesn't make any logical sense, and here's why... and go on to explain your position -- that's not only 100% fine, it's heartily encouraged! Tacking on something like "You're an idiot" (with the implication of "because you disagree with me") would not be appropriate. It's Fratching, not Reddit.

There IS such a thing as a federal carry license, and the guy may have been confused between that and a FFL. However, unless the guy is an actively employed federal agent or has diplomatic immunity, you're more likely to see Elvis back from the dead than you are to see such a license.
