I started orientation for my new job on Monday. New job promises to be pretty great, at least it looks like I've been hired by a terrific company.
Halfway through orientation yesterday, what happens? I am stricken with kidney stones and must leave immediately.
If you've never had them, I can say without hyperbole that they're the worst pain I've ever had in my life. I've had them twice before. They come on quite suddenly, and there's no mistaking what exactly is causing the pain, although the first time I had them it scared me to death because I didn't know what was going on.
I told the trainer I had to leave, and she could tell that I was in misery. She said to call my manager and leave her a message. I got her voicemail. I was concerned because of something in the training manual that said if we missed a day, we had to start completely over. That's cool, no problem, although it will suck to go two weeks with no paycheck, but I can hang.
What worries me is that when the HR department first called me to tell me when orientation was and I was concerned I couldn't make the July 9 session, she told me that orientation begins every other Monday and if I couldn't make the 9th I'd have to attend the 23rd, but that she'd have to talk to my manager and see if the position could be held open for me.
I ended up going to the emergency room, being put on some nice IV drugs that made me go to my happy place for a while. They did a CT scan, which was new (last time I had kidney stones, they did X-rays), and sent me home with Vicodin and Cipro (I also had a nasty urinary tract infection) and a doctor's note saying "Do not work for three days."
I have not been able to get hold of anyone at my new job. All I'm getting is voicemail, and no one's calling me back. My husband says that they've already made me the offer and I've accepted, they shouldn't fire me for something like this that's not my fault. But I'm really worried.
P.S. I'm feeling okay but really tired.
