  • Oh, this does suck.

I started orientation for my new job on Monday. New job promises to be pretty great, at least it looks like I've been hired by a terrific company.

Halfway through orientation yesterday, what happens? I am stricken with kidney stones and must leave immediately.

If you've never had them, I can say without hyperbole that they're the worst pain I've ever had in my life. I've had them twice before. They come on quite suddenly, and there's no mistaking what exactly is causing the pain, although the first time I had them it scared me to death because I didn't know what was going on.

I told the trainer I had to leave, and she could tell that I was in misery. She said to call my manager and leave her a message. I got her voicemail. I was concerned because of something in the training manual that said if we missed a day, we had to start completely over. That's cool, no problem, although it will suck to go two weeks with no paycheck, but I can hang.

What worries me is that when the HR department first called me to tell me when orientation was and I was concerned I couldn't make the July 9 session, she told me that orientation begins every other Monday and if I couldn't make the 9th I'd have to attend the 23rd, but that she'd have to talk to my manager and see if the position could be held open for me.

I ended up going to the emergency room, being put on some nice IV drugs that made me go to my happy place for a while. They did a CT scan, which was new (last time I had kidney stones, they did X-rays), and sent me home with Vicodin and Cipro (I also had a nasty urinary tract infection) and a doctor's note saying "Do not work for three days."

I have not been able to get hold of anyone at my new job. All I'm getting is voicemail, and no one's calling me back. My husband says that they've already made me the offer and I've accepted, they shouldn't fire me for something like this that's not my fault. But I'm really worried.

P.S. I'm feeling okay but really tired.

    First, I'm glad you're OK.

Second, hopefully they will realize it was circumstances beyond your control and they'll keep the position open for you.

    What's the new job about?

You have my sympathy. Not only do kidney stones suck, but this was really horrible timing to boot. All i can say is if they fire you over this, they weren't worth working for anyway.

Well, hopefully the doctor's note (and the emergency room bills - ack!) will be enough to keep them from being upset. Glad you are feeling better. Good luck with the new job!

Get well soon, and good luck.

i recently got fired from my new job at hd for things out of my control too - my antidepressants made me uncontrollably drowsy. of course, the minute i realized this I spoke to my doctor and got onto something different, but does HD care? nope. I imagine if i had a seizure due to the meds or something, they'd be more forgiving. It wasn't MY fault.

              Good luck.

Hope they pass on their own. I get stones just about every year in august. 2 and 3 yrs ago they had to be removed surgically and.......they DON'T make an incision. At least you get the happy drugs. Get well soon.

                  Yeouch.

We had a guy here that had kidney stones pretty bad last year. They originally thought it might be appendicitis.

I'm glad I don't seem to have any of those sorts of problems myself.

I forget if you mentioned whether you are in the US or not, but if you are, you have nothing to worry about (and I sympathize with the pain. Had one once and I never want to go through that again). Under the FMLA, they cannot take action against you (release you from the job) because of a medical emergency/issue on your part. Keep that note from your doctor and any accompanying documentation juuuust in case you need it.

It sounds as though you may have a valid claim under the Americans with Disabilities Act, if you're in the USA. You do not necessarily need a lawyer. Contact your local EEOC office. If you prevail, don't expect a big payoff, but they may have to pay you for the time you were out of work, with penalties.

If you file a claim, that helps every other person that comes after you, and also places that company under the eye of the commission.

                        UPDATE: All is well

The good news is that my job is safe. The bad news is that now I have to wait until the July 23rd orientation session. My manager called me yesterday and assured me that my job had never been in any danger, but that the three days off ordered by the doctor would cause me to miss too much and fall too far behind in training. So everything's copacetic. Thanks for the good wishes!!

I'm going to be working for a corporation that owns hospitals. The place where I'll be working is a centralized billing center for several of the hospitals, and I'll be working in a very specialized niche of billing known as underpayment analysis.

Basically, when managed care organizations--insurance companies--contract to pay hospitals a certain amount for procedures and then fail to pay the agreed-upon amount, my department researches the missing or short payments.

It doesn't sound exciting, but you have no idea how glad I was to get out from under my old boss.

Aiyi, I am sorry. I hadn't been troubled by them in years (a twinge now and then, but nothing serious). I'm supposed to be *ahem* catching it in a jar every time I go to the bathroom and then straining it to see if the stone has passed, but right now it's the UTI that's kicking my arse.

Cool new avatar, by the way!

The second time I had the stones, my ex-husband did a little online research and found something saying that people who get kidney stones also tend to get bone spurs (which I've also had) and vice versa. Also, if you've had stones before, you'll probably get them again. Not a happy thought.
