  • Fist Fight over Yu Gi Oh! Cards! Oh my!

Wasn't witnessed by hubs, but told to him by one of my co-workers.

Okay, I worked until a little after 2 PM today, then family & I grabbed lunch and went home and took naps and hung out until later this evening.

Hubs wanted to get a new series of Eberron books that had come out, and he wanted to check if the Gaming Store I work at had the books first so we went there. Kelly & I stayed in the car when he ran in.

Hubs came back out and said "L" told him a wacky story:

We have tables in the back of the store that can be used to play games, around 12 NOON/1 PM our regular Yu Gi Oh! card players start showing up. I'm told that around 5:30, there are informal tournaments that start being played.

Now, our Yu Gi Oh! card players basically spend their entire allowances on the theme decks, boosters, card sleeves. They think nothing of dropping $30 in Yu Gi Oh! stuff in our store (I'm not complaining, but these are kids. When I was their age, I was lucky to get a $1 a week).

Anyways, right before we pulled into the parking lot, "L" had to break up a fight. Some kids were stealing other kids' cards. Instead of talking to "L" or "J" about it, they decided to go outside to the sidewalk in front of our store and beat each other up! "L" broke it up, but since it was a little too dark, he couldn't see their faces. If he finds out who they were, they are banned from the store.

Sheesh ... I guess CCGs are srs bidness.

Insane. Too bad cards are such good money for game stores.

We played Flying Buffalo's Nuclear War (with ALL of the expansions). Far more fun.

The randomization of CCG boosters makes them great profits for game stores. The same goes for D&D Miniatures, Dreamblade boxes, Axis and Allies boxes, and other prepainted collectable miniature games. You don't know what you're going to get, so you won't think twice about dropping more money for another booster or two incase that lucky super rare piece/card you want is in there. It's super profit and often a nice impulse purchase.

      Me?

I play Hordes and Warmachine. :>

That had to be the most hilarious fight ever, but my money's on more open hand slapping than actual fists.

Those games suck ... it's so much more fun to drop a Supergerm on someone. Who cares about losing a chit when you just killed 25,000,000 people!

Yeah, I work at a Gaming Store, and one of my favorite card games is Solitaire! Though I'm thinking of buying Munchkin Cthullhu, but we don't have anybody to play with besides ourselves (my hubs & me for a 2 person card game - not for anything else! Get ya'll's minds outta the gutter! ).

However, I did bring home a 2-player game called MiniMonFa. It's a Mini Monster Fantasy. All cards. It's fun - the first time we played, I beat hubs at the game! YAY! But yeah, I've never had the patience to learn the CCG games. Though I do like the D&D miniatures. And because they're pre-painted and lightweight, when hubs is running a D&D game, he brings those along for the Monsters and in case someone needs a mini of their charrie.

My local game store has apparently started hosting MtG birthday parties for kids...at least that was what it looked like. I ventured down there yesterday to pick up a D&D book and map pack, and the downstairs was a total zoo. One staff member supervising the kids in the basement (IMO there should have been two at least, the few parents there weren't helping) and the poor night manager was upstairs barely holding on to his sanity. Kids thought nothing of dropping $30 at a time on boosters (no fistfights, although there was a shoving match that almost took down a shelving unit)...and some of their language would have made a longshoreman blush

Idrinkarum, MiniMonFa sounds like a cool game. Gaming is a MASSIVE thing in my circle of friends (mostly board games and pen and paper RPGS that's NOT D&D like IronClaw, yay!). If you would suggest it as a good game, I'll pick up a box and see how it goes at the next game party.

We kick kids with bad language out of the store. Period. We won't tolerate it and we won't be their parents.

Heh, I was in to CCGs for a looooong time, and only really stopped because I moved away from everyone I played with. I started with the classic M:tG, then moved to Star Wars, BattleTech, ....Pokemon... and played a few others, but didn't really buy cards for those. Though it was a little more complicated, I really liked BattleTech. I also think some of my better Magic cards were lifted by a "friend." But to actually get into a FIGHT over it? A little crazy.

It is cool. The main game has 2 decks and there are expansions of 2 more decks so the game is for 2-4 players. The rules are written ... interestingly. Apparently, the company is Italian and so the rules were originally in Italian but then translated to English when it came here. Some of the wording is hilarious. Like, "... the rules exposed below ..."

Another good party game is Guillotine (which can go really quickly so in 30 minutes you could play at least 5-10 games). Also, there's Red Dragon Inn (2-4 player game with an expansion coming this summer for 4 new characters and that can be played alone or played with the original game). Red Dragon Inn is what happens after the D&D adventure is over and the adventurers are resting up for the next adventure.

Also, for a non-RPG type card game, there is the ol' stand-by of Apples to Apples & can be made into a great drinking game. (I don't know anything about that at all. ). LOL Just some more suggestions.

Oh yeah, Broomjockey - the fight was over people stealing cards. Which is not nice.

Have things died down in the M:TG and related areas so that people no longer buy three boxes at a time?

And... while SuperGerm is fun, there's just something exquisite about actually having spytrapper actually work that's just so much more satisfying, even if it is only two million people.

Haven't heard of Fishing for Terrorists. Right now, the kids are dropping $$ on Yu Gi Oh! like it's no tomorrow. We have quite a few people dropping like $30-$60 on M:tG SINGLES.

Then there's the boardgame, Arkham Horror that comes in and then just as quickly goes out.

I might hang out tomorrow afternoon with my daughter (she has spring break) and get the full story from the others and try to teach her how to play Candy Land.
