I met one person that did that attitude to me, and even held out a bible at me, so I hissed at it! needless to say, she fled.
I've had a few of those and we get them around Christmas. They piss me off to no end. I just ignore them or in one case, tell them I'm pagan just to purely shut them up. (I'm not, but I agree with a lot of the Wiccan beliefs especially the threefold law, which is why I always look forward to reading the karma stories on here.)

A good example of how to deal with them would have to be threatening to arrest them . It was on Rush, this cop drama in Australia that usually attempts to negotiate with the criminals rather than working out who solved the murder, kind of like "crime prevention." This particular episode had a girl threatening to commit suicide and a Christian couple constantly harassing some of the poor cops. In the end, they threatened to arrest them so they fled.

OW: Well, god smiled on you, being able to turn in 3 months of rent and utilities at a time. $XXXX is a lot of money.
Me: ( because she's announcing this out LOUD for everyone to hear)
DW: (In a very pointed voice) SOME people could stand to give a little Christian charity, to help those in need, instead of hoarding what they have.
Me: (blurts before I can think) ExCUSE me? Did I hear you right. Did you just imply that I should forgo paying my rent so I can donate money to someone else?
DW: It would be the CHRISTIAN thing to do.
Me: Guess it's a good thing I'm not CHRISTIAN, isn't it?
GaAaaaaah!!!! Like it's Christian to give all your money away and live on other people's charity??? SHEESH.

BTW, my heartiest sympathies for all those caught in the path of the hurricanes. It never ceases to amaze me how horrible people can be after disasters.

I'm glad you're okay, Lupo. I can imagine the tempers that must be flaring down there. I have been talking to people down there all week, trying to get cell phone service because everything else is down. It's been a mess. At times, a highly emotional mess. People freak when they can't get minutes on their phone.

That said, you lost SEVERAL HUNDRED DOLLARS worth of groceries? Good Bog, are you feeding an army down there, girl? How on earth did you end up with hundreds of dollars in perishables? I am totally confused.
Because as we all know, on the Internet all men are men, all women are men and all children are FBI agents.

Lupo, I feel your pain. My electric was off for 8 days here in Cincinnati. I have ever in my life seen such absurity in people than what I've seen this passed week.

What's funny is that if people would actually behave with courtesy and wait their turn things would actually move more smoothly.

Heh, I suppose I should explain. I may live alone, but I LOVE to cook. And sometimes I DO, in fact feed an army. Rather, an army of friends when I host movie night, gaming night, or just feel like experimenting in the kitchen. I cook a lot on weekends, and make meals ahead of time to freeze/store in the fridge for weeknight meals when I work late.

That said, two days before i evacuated, when Ike was still in Cuba, and it was predicted to weaken enough not to be a huge concern to the Texas coastline, I went shopping to restock all of my frozen meats, cheese, produce, dairy, etc, because I had been living on mac and cheese and ramen for the last several weeks until my first big paycheck hit and I got my financial aid. My fridge and freezer were empty until I restocked them. Then the hurricane hit...and I had to restock them again.

Thus, lost a few hundred in groceries that needed replenishing. AGAIN.

Oh, ok. . I eat very differently, I go to the farmer's market and Whole Foods every morning and get just enough fresh food for that day's worth of meals, so having several hundred dollars worth of groceries on hand is just mind-blowing to me.

Oh, I WISH I could do that. I love Whole Foods! I go there every once in a while to get stuff I can't find anywhere else, specialty foods, etc. But since I'm in college and on a very strict budged, that's only once every few months, IF I'm lucky. I love going for their produce, too, when I can afford it.

                    Ah, I gotcha.

Yeah, I understand you're the normal one and I'm the weirdo. I am INCREDIBLY picky about what I eat, so my diet mostly consists of very, very fresh fruits and vegetables and high quality unpasteurized cheese and milk. I buy small amounts every day cause I can't stand food that's sat in the fridge/freezer for a couple of days, it picks up the flavors of the other food stored in the fridge/freezer.

I'm really obnoxious about mealtimes, anyway. I won't sit down to eat unless I have a clean tablecloth over the table and a placemat and cloth napkin set up. I need to marry a chef, I think.

I hope your replacement grocery shopping is painless and SC free!

I begin to understand why my mother stockpiles ridiculous amounts of non-perishable food, essentials (toilet paper, toothpaste, soap) and survival equipment (sleeping bags, lanterns, etc.) in the basement.

Given that the coming winter *might* be a bit tougher than usual, given the bizarre weather patterns in the past couple of years, I should probably stockpile a little bit too - following my own advice.

Most people don't intuitively consider frozen food to be a "perishable", because while it's frozen it lasts a very long time. The problem is that as soon as it's thawed out a bit, you have to use it straight away, and you can't re-freeze it. So while my usual stockpile of frozen pizza is normally very convenient (and surprisingly non-sucky for health, in moderation), it would be fairly useless if the city lost power for more than a few hours.

On the plus side, I do already have battery-powered radios that work reliably, torches of various sizes, warm clothes and a spare extra-thick duvet. As long as the building doesn't fall over (not likely), that should keep me fairly comfortable for several days, even if the power and heating go off and the temperature reaches -40° outside. If I have food and drink as well, that is. Soup fulfills both needs.

And if the building *does* fall over, that's what the air-raid shelter is for. Duh.

I pretty much know that this winter is gonna be rough. One, we've had a really hot September. Second, my exterminator tells me that the mice have been storing away their food since July, when they normally do it in the early Fall. Observing the behavior of animals can give you a good prediction of how the winter is gonna be.

The worst storm I've had to deal with were the blizzards of 1990-91. Those managed to shut down the entire city. 3 feet of snow on the ground, 7+ foot drifts...meaning very little was open. Oddly enough, very few power lines came down, even though there was lots of ice.

Where I live now, it doesn't flood. If it did, there'd better be an Ark coming through...

See if you can get wind up versions of both of these, if the brown stuff does hit te fan batteries may be hard to get hold of.
