This is an important thing to note, early is not the same as punctual. Remember, if someone tells you to come at nine, at a quarter-of he'll probably still be getting out of the shower.

I have one rule to add....


When you show up for your interview and the manager asks you to follow him/her to the office, KEEP UP WITH THE MANAGER!!! If you do not walk with a purpose and can not keep up with the manager, I guarentee you will not be able to keep up with the pace of the work at that location. I used this alot when I did the hiring at two different places.

Depending on the job itself, this may actually be a violation of ADA regulations. Now, agreed, if the job is physical and requires the employee to be able to move quickly, then I'd say go for it. But if it's for a primarily desk job, then no, being able to walk quickly should not be a requirement.

I can't help it! I'm always early! Extremely early. I started my first job in the middle of the Christmas rush, in a shopping mall. I learned quickly that if I didn't get to work two, sometimes three hours early, I didn't get a parking spot (Never mind a nearby parking spot.) Even that early, I often had to park down the hill from our parking area.

But, still, if I'm early for my appointment, I tough it out, and use the time to get the lay of the store.

I'm looking for part-time work (Evenings and weekends). Got a call saying I had the job, if I could work overnights. I'm sure my real job would enjoy me showing up with no sleep.

Heh. I was just about to say that, myself. But then, the fact that I walk with a stick would be pretty much a giveaway that if walking speed is a job requirement, we can skip the formality of the interview and mutually agree on 'thanks, but no thanks'.

It happens. It's the employers trying to figure out if the applicant's listed availiblity is serious, or just bargaining position. Usually done by more-desperate companies. Me, I tried to always check availibility, and ask point blank early during the interview if their written avilibility was serious, because the postion required nights and weekends (had a lot of applicants looking for 9-5 weekdays, which I had very limited shifts availible). If I didn't get a fairly straighforward answer quickly, I cut the interview short because honstly, I didn't have what they were looking for.

(The answer didn't have to be all nights and weekends, but if they hesitated long enough for me to realize they were thinking "how bad do I need this?", I knew they weren't going to be happy with what I could offer.)

The jobs I was hiring for were 8 hours on your feet, lifting and carrying heavy boxes and furniture. If they could not keep up with me, could not move with a purpose, like they really wanted the job, then they would have to really impress me with the interview. No shuffling of the feet, no hands in your pockets. We're not here to take a stroll in the park.

My workplace likes people who can do a good mix of day time and evening shifts, we're open from 9am til midnight every day of the week. The shifts are at least six hours long, so when you get an application with the following availability:

Monday: 6pm - 9pm
Tuesday: 5pm - 7pm
Wednesday: 6pm - 7pm
Thursday: UNAVAILABLE
Friday: UNAVAILABLE
Saturday: 12pm - 3pm
Sunday: 1pm - 4pm

Hmmm, they can't even do a full shift. They're not going to get a call.

When I was unemployed and had to put in x number of aps per week, there were a few places I did NOT want to call me for an interview. So I made sure they didn't. [snip sabotage]
Worked every time.

I never thought of doing that when I was having to make applications in order to collect unemployment; I just never went to the places I got referred to if I decided I hated them or the job being offered. Bad idea when the state suddenly decides it wants its 400 dollars back and you have to gut what little savings you have to pay it off. I'll definitely keep it in mind if such a situation ever happens again.

1. Dont try to get out of the admissions charge, you dont have to go into the gallery to be interviewed and its just tacky that your applying at a non-profit organisation and trying to weasel out of a measely $3

I just remembered something when I did the interview for my current job...

I got hired cuz I was willing to work at 8$ an hour. That was a dollar more than my previous job.

The girl that passed before me demanded to have nights and week-ends off and 12 bucks an hour.

I got the job cuz I'm willing to do the job, fancy that.
