Argh, this isn't funny, just infuriating and I simmer whilst I type it. Be warned.
One of the things I handle here at night is stuff for the city districts. Normally things like broken water mains or trees down over roads during storms, etc. But I also handle animal welfare and the animal shelter after hours...
I received a call from the RCMP a just a little while ago regarding a stray dog. Apparently this is what happened:
Some fester douche mold of a couple were out taking a late night walk when they found a stray dog. The dog had a collar and was on a walking leash. So even the most casual observer would come to the correct conclusion: The owner was walking the dog and the dog got away from him or her. Now, a normal person coming across this dog would probably do one of three things:
1) Report the dog to the local shelter/animal welfare/SPCA who can check the collar and return it to the owner.
2) Pick the dog up, check the collar and return it to the owner.
3) Pick the dog up and drop it at the local shelter or SPCA where they can check the collar or ID chip and return it to its owner.
That would be the normal response, right? Of course. However, that response only applies to people who aren't ignorant assholes.
This pair of crotch sores saw the dog and figured "Oh hey, someone lost a dog." so they picked the dog up, did not check the collar, took the dog over to the side of the street, tied him to the phone pole then left him there and went home. Where at some point some time later they remembered the dog and called the RCMP to tell the RCMP "Oh hey, we tied a dog to a pole, go get him."
The RCMP dispatcher, obviously baffled and horrified that these nimrods picked up someone's dog and just tied it to a pole in the middle of no where then had the gale to call her and tell her to come get it, asked the obvious question I'm sure you're thinking: Why the heck did you do that?
"Oh, well we didn't want him just wandering the street."
Indeed. They didn't want him to even touch the street apparently as they indicated they had tied him tight enough to the pole to stop him from reaching the street. So they left only him with about 3 feet worth of leash tops ( According to them. Yes, they specifically said they tied him really close and he didn't have much leeway to move so he couldn't get to the curb. Part of the reason they did this seems to be to make the RCMP come get the dog faster as they warned the dispatcher a few times that the dog had little room to move so they should come pick him soon. )
But it gets better. When I asked the dispatcher for the address.....well the fuckheads didn't give her one. They gave her a street name and a rough area of several city blocks and told her "Oh you'll see him when you drive by."
<twitch>
Now animal welfare isn't up to the RCMP obviously, not that they didn't want to go get the poor thing. But its Friday night so they're already completely jammed up dealing with, well, law enforcement. Thus they're calling me.
Now I get to sit here and try and find an animal welfare officer who's still awake that can go drive around aimlessly in this neighbourhood trying to find this poor dog. They don't normally work this late at night so I have little choice but to keep going down my list over and over till I wake one up. Which is unlikely as they only have company cells which are usually turned off this late because, well, normally no one is stupid enough to tie a dog to a pole and leave it there till 3am.
I don't know how long he's been out there so far but it looks like he's going to be out there for a while yet thanks to these two assholes.
