Actually, Pizza Hut is not part of Pepsico. It used to be but has not been for at least 5 years. It is now Tricon/YUM! The restaurants were "losing" (ie not making enough) too much money for Pepsi. We still have Pepsi products though.
Here is one of the questions right off Yum's web site.

How long has the company been in business?
Yum! Brands has been the world's largest restaurant company since 1997 after KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell spun-off from PepsiCo.
My 2 cents: I have noticed Arby's has gone from Coke to Pepsi. Talking with a small business owner, I have noticed, it also has to deal with the distributor of the product to see which brand they will carry also.

Just skimmed the thread here, so I apologize in advance if I'm reading this out of context, but... that is exactly what they did.
      Yup ... wasn't saying that they didn't.

The fact that they serve only one or the other is indeed a choice they made, and there's enough market share of people willing to drink Pepsi products they aren't going to be bullied into adding Coke to the lineup just because you want it.
I don't bully. I simply get a free glass of water rather than order a high-profit Pepsi. No comment, no whining, just voting with my wallet.

it also has to deal with the distributor of the product to see which brand they will carry also.
Oh, most definitely. Apparently, some of the distributors are just a major hassle. I've known a few small restauranteurs who have switch from one to the other out of sheer disgust.

Holy craps dice batman! I thought it was just me! Coke burns your throat too?!
        Yes.

        Yes, it does.

I'll drink it on occasion, but...I keep a glass of water handy while I do so.

I don't understand why that has to be. I mean, you don't see grocery stores or convience stores selling only Coke or Pepsi products.
Resturants usually have contracts that either give some sort of incentive, or flat out state they can only serve one. Also, beyond contracts and distributors and all that, it's a cost decision. There are minimum orders that need to be made with a distributor, who only carries one or the other, and if everyone's splitting between Coke and Pepsi, you're ordering half as much, which means you're going to run out of something before you can make a new order, because you're just not going to have space for everything. Pop towers are not small. Assuming a place stays with a standard 6 nozzle tower, you now need 2 towers to serve everything, as there'd not be enough space otherwise, and all the equipment to run it takes up space, and would be cost prohibitive for most places, especially since they'd be giving up the discount they'd normally be getting. Marasbaras is doing it exactly right. He's not bitching or whining, he's voting with his wallet. "Coke please." "Pepsi okay?" "Nope, water please."

Which leads me to those places that don't ask if the other's okay. I hate those places. I also hate the people who bitch about being asked, which make places stop asking.

I'm not a big fan of coke or pepsi, although I prefer pepsi. Coke makes my teeth feel all weird. I'm a root beer girl myself.

A little OT - the last time I was really sick - I craved ginger ale. When I was sick as a little girl, my mom always served ginger ale - so this last time I had bronchitis, I craved ginger ale. I told my friend to bring me some and he brought me 7up because his mom told him that works better for tummy aches than ginger ale. I had to explain to him it wasn't for a tummy ache, it was because I was sick and wanted my mommy! He thought I was crazy!
                I understand.

Last time I got sick I got a couple bottles of ginger ale. One of them was in the fridge for a couple months. I just finished it a few weeks ago. Nice and flat. Yum.

Yeah, and when I move my teeth around in my mouth they kinda stick to each other. They grate, and it's very uncomfortable. But my family likes coke. It's very frustrating.

                    Coke zero for me!

I actually like root beer better but I'm so used to diet soda it's hard to drink a sugared one now, and there aren't many good diet root beers.

A little OT, but I was in Atlanta (Coke's world HQ) in 1985 when Coke introduced "New Coke". With all the protests and uproar, I mean people were marching outside Coke's offices with picket signs, you'd have thought that the end of the world was coming.

I prefer Pepsi myself, but I can drink Coke without a problem.

About the only aversion any of us in this house has is my wife to Diet Pepsi. She'll drink Diet Coke, but can't stand Diet Pepsi. Regular Pepsi is OK, but she can't stand diet.

If I may be the one to say it... who cares what type the restaurant serves... they all water it down so much it's hard to taste anything other than sugar water (granted I drink Diet which there is less difference between).

And my two cents, pepsi is better than coke, it's easier to drink and isn't as sticky (my coworkers think I'm insane but I've before complained that coke tasted sticky). that and I have friends who work for pepsi. and my mother drinks coke, my grandma drank pepsi... I like my grandma more than my mother (not that I don't like my mother) so I drink pepsi... my kids (when/if I ever have any) will like their grandma more than me and they will probably drink coke. My family kinda skips generations on everything, not just coke and pepsi, also coffee vs tea (i broke that by drinking niether), gas stove vs electric stove, stick vs auto, and on and on...

Honestly, I can understand having a favourite, but they all taste the same to me...
Coke is slightly more acidy, Pepsi is slightly more sweet. THey have subtle differences, but I suppose this is more of a brand loyality...

To each his own tastes and loyalties. The whole point over this issue is : don't bitch about it if the restaurant where you're eating doesn't carry your beverage of choice. Even if you think the one beverage the restaurant carries tastes like battery acid and your beverage of choice tastes like bottled heavenly orgasm to you.

No brand loyalty here. I like the acidity of Coke.

So, since I've read this little thread and got the craving yesterday for a soda....I've had three now. I had a coke AND a pepsi yesterday and I bought a cherry coke today. That's more soda than I've had in the past 6 months!
