I fear his town too and my sister LIVES there!Quoth KhirasHY View PostEpic...as always...I fear your town

Over on this side of the pond, things are not much better. One of my favourite cliche's that I was sharing with my customers was, "so how many 4x4's did you see in the ditch on the way in?" One smart lady came back with, "I don't know, they must have been all towed out before I got there."Quoth Gravekeeper View PostDear god....so glad I'm off today. Now that the city's buried under snow.

Ah, snow. The white death of the lower mainland. Year after year it amazes me the sheer amount of panic and damage even an inch of snow will cause here amongst you westerners. There was only about an inch in Burnaby when I left for work and you know? I only had to wait for my bus for 10 minutes tonight and in that 10 minutes I saw six cars wipe out. Six. Heck, 3 of them went one after another. They actually watched the car ahead of attempt to take a turn too fast and go spinning out into someone’s yard.
Even on my street, it has just been a sheet of ice. And it's hilly to boot. All the denziens of the neighbourhood have learned that if you can't get your car up the first hill, you've gotta park it and hoof it. The hill in question? 250m long, on a curve, on something like a 15 or 20 degree angle. Not much sun on this hill.
Almost makes me happy that I don't drive. Almost.
Oh man it was really bad out here this year. Several people took out lightstands on the Pat Bay (highway), and they couldn't even get the double-deckers up the hill at Island View during the worst of it.Quoth Buglady View PostI dunno, GK, it seems to me you're doing OK; sublimating anger into humour is pretty healthy!
Re: ZOMG SNOW!! and idiot drivers... I'm from the coast originally (Victoria) so I'm familiar with the panic occasioned by "Teh White Stuff!!!eleventy!". Also the "Haha I have an SUV so I can drive full speed ... wait, why am I twelve feet away from the road and stuck in a snowbank???!" people. (There's a distinct subset of the population for whom 4 wheel drive only serves to get them twice as badly stuck, three times as far from the road).
What surprised me was that THE SAME THING happens in Calgary...
Wait...people act like assclowns in Calgary too? ohhh

Perhaps that is it. I think I'm usually looking slightly confused and/or frightened; they must view this as their time to attack. I guess they're usually right. Maybe I should just start swinging my arms around when I'm around other people.Quoth Gravekeeper View PostYou're missing the proper expression than. Its all in the expression.

You need to keep your expression neutral yet summon the deepest, blackest parts of your soul and let it show just around the eyes. ;pQuoth lightmylamb View PostPerhaps that is it. It's a slightly different kind of assclownery, but yeah, fraid so. My own favourite example is the people who decide that honking their horns will magically allow the person ahead of them in an intersection to get better traction and make the turn faster. I know the advance left-turn signals are short, but seriously people, that intersection is basically a skating rink at this point. *Everyone* spins their wheels when they are starting to move forward; laws of physics! You have to take it slowly or you won't get anywhere at all.Quoth Kirkygirl View PostWait...people act like assclowns in Calgary too? ohhh

I have been walking or taking the bus everywhere. No way in hell am I taking the car out where idiots can smoosh it.

Aaaaaand we're getting even MORE snow right now!
I don't know how much more of this I can take! Thank goodness for Volkswagens though, otherwise I'd be hoofing it home. Again. ><
I even heard that in California, it's below 40 F! (Wildomar area) Okay, this is really starting to scare me. Everyone, go and plant more trees and take the bus, stop using fuel!

I almost envy you. We're seeming to get a non-white Christmas, and it really depresses me. Y'know, as far as I remember, every Christmas (except 2007) has been white so this doesn't really feel like one... I'm hoping we get lots and lots of snow tomorrow and on Tuesday.
Oh, and I know, in some parts (all?) of Canada the winter is very much like Finnish ones - below zero (Celsius), snow, dark, cold, more snow, more dark... And pretty much nothing shuts down regardless of the weather conditions. It still amuses me to see Californians go frenzy over one half of an inch of snow
ETA: I know the expression. If you are sitting on the bus and the seat next to you is vacated, make sure to look every boarder straight in the eye and stare them angrily - that'll make sure nearly every time that you remain undisturbed in your seat.A man can be stupid and not know it, but not if he is married.

Fun factoid: the official definition of "White Christmas" in Britain is if a single snowflake falls on the roof of the Met Office in London between midnight and midnight on Christmas Day. That's what the betting shops use to determine who to pay out, so you can bet there will be some weather people putting in some very cold overtime to observe it.
The weather forecast for Helsinki is for snow tomorrow and Wednesday, and cold enough temperatures to make at least some of it stick.
