I love my cards, they're amazingly accurate and comfortable to use. :] They have never been wrong yet.

That being said nobody's asked any stupid questions yet...

Anyway. Recommended reading... Depends on what you want to know, really.
I don't really have any particular focus for my curiosity, at the moment. I guess "general overview" describes what I'm asking for (preferably without having to spend money; on a site loaded with retail workers, it probably doesn't need mentioning that this particular RW isn't exactly rich ).

(And, just for giggles, I took that Arcana quiz that Ironclad Alibi mentioned. Scored as XVI: The Tower, at 69%, with I: Magician following at 56%, tied with XII: Death. Were I a believer, would I be worried? Yes, I realize there's ample opportunity for uncertainty and vagueness, without an actual reading.)

Ironclad - I just took the quiz and got "The Empress" which sounds alot like me anyway.

I have 2 decks myself. One is a generic beginers deck I got about 15 years ago, but it is my favourite. The other one I find the cards are too large for my hands so I dont use it very often. And I only do my own readings anyway.

I'm glad you like the idea. It's interesting how everyone has an arcana, but people tend to only admit the ones you'd expect someone to be proud of -- the Emperor, the Empress, etc. I've only found one person willing to own up to being of the Devil arcana.
How would one pick an arcana? never did much of anything with the tarot though i had a friend into doing astrological charts.

oh, I like tests like that...
            94% the Tower
            88% the High Priestess
            81% the Devil
            81% the Emperor
and the rest were all below 80%.

I do it with word of mouth, mostly. At least until the website goes up.

It is amazing really though what people will believe you can do just because you have a deck of cards...

Wondering what my arcana is, I Googled on "Tarot arcana" and found a site that answers "Which Major Arcana Tarot Card Are You?"
I tried that, though I am not a tarot card guy--I did it more for shits and giggles.

The site told me my major arcana was The Sun, though it went down to a tiebreaker between that and High Priestess (81% each), with Death and The Fool very close behind (75% each). As a guy with the nickname of Jester, I was amused that I scored so highly with The Fool. Not surprised....just amused. Also amusingly, Magician, which is what I do for part of my living, only was 56%.

That all being said, I have no idea what any of it means.

Seriously I'm a reader myself, admittedly a novice, but I am learning. The deck that attached itself to me is the Robin Wood Tarot deck I got many years ago.

I'm learning to read on my own, and I currently have five decks:

My first deck was the Quest Tarot. I love the CGI. It also seems to be almost brutally honest.
Second deck was the Goddess Tarot. I find it fairly honest, but tends to soften the blow.
Third deck was the Universal Fantasy Tarot, which is striking and beautiful, but rather aloof.
Fourth deck is a pocket size Hanson-Roberts Tarot. It's a pretty, friendly deck.
Fifth deck was the Gilded Tarot. It's coloring is different, which I'm adjusting to, and the illustrations sometimes seem a bit stilted. I haven' t had it long, so I can't tell anything more about it.

I'm considering the Robin Wood Tarot, because of the Pagan theme.

I've been wanting to learn for the longest time...now I've suddenly got a whole list of interesting decks to choose from! I don't really know if there's such a thing as a 'beginner's deck' so I'm looking through all the ones you guys are listing to try to find one that appeals to me. The Robin Wood deck is beautiful, maybe I'll try that one...
It's little things that make the difference between 'enjoyable', 'tolerable', and 'gimme a spoon, I'm digging an escape tunnel'.

Those are some mighty good decks. The Gilded is particularly difficult for me to read with. I don't connect with the illustrations very well.

Well, there's a lot of how to read Tarot sets, that come with a deck. Almost any deck has a LWB (Little White Book that tells you the meaning of the cards)

If you ask me, I'd take the Tarot Discovery Kit by Amy Zerner and Monte Farber if I was recommending a first deck.

I've always thought tarot cards were interesting and remember an acquaintance from high school giving me a reading. I wish I remembered what she said.

According to the quiz, my arcana is Death at 75%; with The Tower, The Emperor, The Sun, The Fool, The High Priestess, Magician and Justice tied for second at 63%. Clearly I'm just weird.

The Starter Deck. Most major bookstores should carry it and if you have to go through a smaller store they can order it for you.

It has the text book meanings written right onto the cards. After you've done a few readings and you become more familiar with each card's meaning you can apply the meanings to the other decks and learn to give deeper and more meaningful readings by looking at their imagery.

                                Just an idea.
