  • You can't control somebody else's face

I was at work over the weekend - reminder I work at a truck stop & I was standing near the truck counter & this trucker comes up to me & says "ya know your janitor guy, the one walking around cleaning & stocking stuff, he doesn't smile enough & isn't friendly enough." I was trying really hard not to , but kept a straight face & told him "well, I'm sorry sir, but you can't control somebody else's face." He then proceeded to tell me that his was a legitimate complaint & that he tried several times to talk to the janitor, but he didn't answer & wouldn't smile. I just told the him that I would pass it along & he left, but the whole time I was thinking - his job is to clean up after morons like you - NOT to entertain you!!

This particular guy I work with is a nice guy, has a quirky sense of humor & is very good at his job. He makes sure everything that needs to get done while he is there - gets done. He doesn't smile much - his job is pretty much solitary with very little interaction with people, even other employees. Why on earth do people think it is his job to entertain them?

On another note - On New Years Eve, they found a body of a young (26) female doctorate student from VCU behind the gas station next door that my company also owns. It is a suspicious death & the police are looking into it, but I feel SO bad for the family of that girl.

I get this all the time. But apparently it is our job to smile. We had to take a class on it.

luckily where I work in the position that this CW holds - as long as he does his job & the store looks good - he does not have to interact with customers & is not required to smile if he doesn't want to. Honestly, he has a GREAT smile when he does smile, but I think it is just his nature that he doesn't smile that often.

Get what all the time? People complaining about employees not smiling, or dead people behind the store?

        If it's the latter, I didn't do it. I'm a good boy.

Do you have a link to this story by chance? I go to VCU and hadn't heard anything about this and can't find anything about it. And I just can't believe another student was killed.

I'd suggest PMs, since posting the story would pretty much give away exactly where Last to Know works, and probably identity, as well.

Wednesday Addam's Smile This is always how I tell folks to smile when they're confronted with these "You must be perky!!" idiot SC's. Fast forward to around :50, that says it all.

I sometimes get people who tell me I need to smile, or they ask me why I'm frowning. The men in my dad's family have a natural stern, scowling expression. I inherited it, so I often look very serious even when I'm not. I also tend to frown when I'm concentrating on the task at hand, so I usually look angry when I'm just deep in thought. Even worse, when I do smile, it often looks fake or like a sarcastic smirk. However, my wife said she likes this one devious half-grin which looks like I'm plotting something sadistic. With all that in mind, I usually jokingly tell people that they should worry the most when I do smile, and flash the devious half-grin. That's usually sufficient to get my point across.
