I envy you that job, AnaKhouri. I would love to have a job involving books!

My shift yesterday: WTF, is there some kind of catastrophe coming up that I don't know about?? The lineup went back to the freezer section, turned the corner and kept going ... and a lot of them were massive orders ($250-$300 and up).

You should've seen me sprint for the doors when 3 p.m. came around. I went to the nearest restaurant and sat on the patio (indoor dining just around the corner) and shivered while I ate my supper and had TWO drinks with it.

I have a job again! I don't know if I will have any stories for this place though. I am a Youth Services Associate (I help kids find books). It's a low-stakes job & I figure if people are not spending money someplace they'll feel less entitled than if they were. And kids are generally nicer than adults 😄

It's a weird feeling when random little stuff you never really think about just...disappears from retail.

I realized I needed to replenish on shave soap and aftershave, which I buy extremely rarely - like every couple years for soap, and even longer for aftershave. And the brands I have used and liked for years are just gone from brick and mortar retail. Wasn't anything rare or fancy, just Van Der Hagen and Pinaud Clubman. But over the last weeks and months I have checked at *breath* Kroger, Safeway, Target, Walmart, Walgreens, and CVS. And found jack and squat. I know I can get it online, but really - things like shaving soap and aftershave aren't the stuff you expect to vanish.

No worse a shot than when "entry level" wants a degree, internship, and five years' experience.
The fun ones are the ones that want 5 years of experience for something that has been out for 6 months.

I was watching "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" the other day, and noticed something I've missed several times.

In the scene where the Green Knight and the Black Knight are fighting, the Green Knight's weapon changes. He starts off with a sword, then he has a mace, then he has an axe.

I've seen that movie several times, and it never hit me that this happened!

I sometimes find it a bit amusing when companies are advertising that they're hiring for "All Positions". I wonder if anyone has ever gone in and tried to apply for the CEO job at one of them. Hey, CEO is a position, and the sign does say they're hiring for "All Positions".

(Also, it amuses me that our signatures coincide.)

Speaking of the rerun channels on TV, found one showing Outer Limits, and I've not seen that show in years. Watched a few, and noticed a couple things:

One, I read something online recently (heck if I can find it again) that I agree with - I enjoy the episodes that basically end with "well, that happened. Freaking weird, huh?" over ones that try to drop a moral.

Two, no idea when they started doing this, but there's a very subtle little bit of censorship in the title cards and bumpers now. The silhouette of a naked woman that stands up and becomes the core of the apple - there's a shower curtain blur over it now. Such a weirdly small and specific thing to have to pixelate.

And then there's Zulily. "No, you can't SEE our website until you sign up for our emails without knowing if there's even anything here you want."
I don't mind the subscription requests (requirements?) for news sites so much (I used to be a journalist, after all, and we did have to get paid ) but the retail sites demanding my email before I can even browse? No thanks. You've just assured me you've got nothing I want.

It is a universal truth: Greed abounds.
