One of my kids named his feet Johnny and Sarah today (after his classmates). For no reason.

So I had quite a few moments over the course of this week from various kids:

One of our kids is VERY energetic and a little drama king (in a positive way). This afternoon, he was doing some painting. On the newspaper in front of him, there were five people who were "naked" from the waist-up. He proceeded to put paint on them, so they looked more "red" than anything. This conversation followed:

Mentor Teacher: Oh dear, [the people in the picture] look a little bit sunburnt don't they?
Kid: No, they're dead.
Mentor teacher: They're dead?
Kid: Yep!
Me/Mentor teacher:

-One of our more shy kids, who has a MASSIVE confidence issue, took great delight today in "poisoning" me. He'd come over to me with a bit of playdough, I'd "eat" it and then he'd tell me it's "poison" and that I'd fall over dead. I'd ham it up a bit...the kids (him in particular) found it hilarious

-BIG breakthrough with our autistic child in the classroom: today he spent playtime making a "petrol truck" out of Lego. He was so proud when he finished that he wanted to go and show the other two teachers in our block. Not only did he do that, he got their names right too! We're still trying to get him to stop calling the front desk staff "office", but we don't want to because it's pretty damn cute . (He does call some of the front desk staff by their names)

-Reading a book today, I asked the kids if they knew what quoits were. The response from one of the kids was priceless: "It's what you put on fish to stop their mouths from shutting."

-One of our kids has a very random habit of finding millipedes in the playground. We don't know WHERE it's come from. O.o

-We have this song that we sing at the end of the day with accompanying actions (essential in this case). The guy comes up from the bottom of the screen, does his actions, then ducks down and pops up on the other side of the screeen. Every time that he kept ducking down today, the kids kept doing it on the floor. I'm trying to reinforce the "thank you" message with our developmentally-delayed child as the sign is similar.

-I ducked out one morning to do some printing for our numeracy block. I come back and I hear a lot of noise from my classroom. Sticking my head in, I discovered the kids singing a little song about the letter "n" while pretending to be nuts frying and popping in the pan. Several of them were bouncing around in a circle until they got dizzy

Two from today. One of my cousins has a 1-year-old son (W), the other has 2 boys aged 3 and 5 (R and T respectively).

-W is currently walking with assistance. He also apparently has a very strong kick because he was wriggling around on the couch with T and kicked him off in the process by "pushing" him with his feet T took great delight in "walking" with W, only to find W "pushing" him towards the couch.

-When it was time to leave, R and T had gone around to say goodbye to everyone . R then walked towards the door as though he was about to leave.

R: Mum, go!
R's mum: No R, mummy has to go and say byebye to everyone.
R: OK, bye bye mummy.

At my sons second birthday party he ended up down to the diapers during dinner, and was covered in chocolate cake, lasagna and everything else. As the party was wrapping up he asked for a bath, and I (not wanting to be rude to our guests) just said 'In a bit.' He stood there for a minute and then put two and two together and turned to all his guests and said 'Goodbye, goodbye.' Cue much laughing from everyone and one of the quickest exits I have ever seen from a dozen people.

When my oldest nephew was a two year old, he found it quite delightful to run and crawl headfirst into hard objects and look at us for our reaction. When he saw our horrified faces, he'd laugh.


His sisters, when they were babies and toddlers, disliked me. The older of the two girls was very strong and was able to push me out of my own room and hold the door so I couldn't come in...when she was 3.

His baby brother and him were the only ones who pined for me to be near them. XD;

Today about 4-5 of the kids in my class decided that it was "giving birth" day.

How? They stuck the dolls up their t-shirts, laid down and "gave birth" to the dolls. My mentor teacher and I couldn't stop laughing!

Also, one of the kids has this tendency to call me "Cookie". Not sure where it came from.

One funny moment and one "YAY, OMG YAY!!!!" moment today.

Funny: It hadn't been THAT hot today, but a couple of kids announced "Miss Fireheart, my brain is sunburnt."

YAY!!!: We have a child in my class who has recently been diagnosed with "mild" autism* and has only recently caught up (more-or-less) with his language development since the start of the term. Today I was in another class, but visited them for a few minutes to drop off something. The second I opened the door, a few kids hugged me, but then out of nowhere, my autistic child came over and hugged me.
He got a high-five for that.

He also got another (Mental) high-five from me today when I discovered that neither he nor another child were in the area they were supposed to be. Turns out that he'd followed the other child, she climbed up a tree and he was waiting at the bottom telling her off. He didn't throw a fit when I took him into his area either. His normal MO is to do a runner (hence him being confined to one specific area) so this was a breakthrough.

It's a HUGE breakthrough with this child because they're still in the diagnosis/supportive measure process and determining what he can and can't have in terms of support. To have something like this appear somewhat spontaneously made my day.

*-this is the "official" label we've been given on his paperwork. In terms of functionality, we're sticking it more or less towards the higher functioning category as his social skills are WAY behind, he's a runner, his language is also delayed and he has trouble staying on-task, but he copes well with the teacher changes and will attempt things.

During the National Roleplay/Wargame championships we had before Easter, we met up with K a longtime friend who were only really get to see at the Nationals. She brought her year-old daughter - who was still in the tummy the last we saw K ^^

She is so cute. We bought her a little wooden wiggly worm as a gift and she loved it. She played that old game with us of dropping the worm and waiting for one of us - usually Housemate - to pick it up. Then Housemate turned to catching it before it hit the floor - so Daughter thought for a moment, leaned over and dropped it over the other side K's response was 'good problem solving!'

Also there was a moment when she headbutted me by accident as I was talking to her when she was crawling over the pub sofas. I went 'bonk!' at the butt. She giggled and proceeded to do it again, with sound effect, then again, until dad intervened saying it was too early for her to learn how to Glasgow Kiss woops. I also did the 'lubblelubblelubble' noise with my tongue, you know the silly noise you make against your front lip. She loved the noise, then tried to match my tongue movements. Monkey see monkey do!

K was actually competing this year too...in the LARP... with Daughter as her 'prop'! The best one was Paranoia, where K had to keep baby from agents of Friend Computer - because of course babies cry, which means they're unhappy, which is illegal said agents were us, the DMs, who were asked by the LARP DM to halt her if we saw her K came third in her category, and Daughter got three cheers from the 700-odd geeks there ^^

This happened earlier tonight:

I had served Lil'Zel some dinner and went off doing the dishes (I had eaten earlier before he came home from school). Suddenly I hear some retching noises.

I run into the dining room and ask: "Oh my, what happened? Were you choking on the food?"

And Lil'Zel answers: "No, but I lost a baby tooth and swallowed it by accident! And now I'm trying to get it back up so I can get money from the Tooth Fairy!"

(We ended up writing a nice letter to the Tooth Fairy explaining what happened, so my guess is that there'll be a coin under the pillow tomorrow anyway )

And Lil'Zel answers: "No, but I lost a baby tooth and swallowed it by accident! And now I'm trying to get it back up so I can get money from the Tooth Fairy!"

New one from this morning.

While we were doing the clear-down from the before-school care shift, one of the preschoolers we take care of was sitting there waiting. There was a minor incident with one of the coordinators this morning and I asked the preschooler what she thought.

Her response was to go over to the staff profiles, point at his picture and then laugh at it.

This is ongoing. I've had my nephew and nieces (I'll call them Thomas, Iris and Princess), ages 7, 6 and 5, over to make cookies a couple of times now, once before Christmas and again for the Superbowl so the adult football fans in the family could have a kid free game. I watched them for a couple of hours the other day and all three of them asked me, individually then in concert, when they were going to get to come over and make cookies again.

So probably here in a month or so I'll plan to borrow them from their parents for a few hours and we'll make some cookies. Thomas recently made a cake by himself, with me just double checking his measurements, so I'm probably going to have him doing the wet mixing for the next cookie session. Iris is more interested in the end product than the putting together though she gets a giggle out of the 'floomph' (adding the flour mix to the wet ingredients). Princess does ok with shaping dough into cookies, but she's easily distracted and not hugely coordinated yet.
