    this seems slimy

Day before yesterday, my boss brings over a short stack of paper, saying "Here's an appraisal and an appraisal review form that <Goodhair> wants you to type up and sign. <Lead Lender> has already approved it."

As I'm typing it up, I notice that the appraisal is 8 years old (from before the housing bust). It's for a building that houses a pizza franchise and a laundromat. Goodhair has written in what he wants typed on the form, but he left the section on the tax value blank. I look it up on the county website, and the current tax value is less than half what the appraised value was 8 years ago.

As I was leaving for the day, I voiced my reservations to my boss, and she tells me that the owners of the place are Goodhair's daughter and son-in-law. I only had reservations before, but now I've got alarm bells going off in my head. My boss tells me that she hadn't looked at the appraisal because Goodhair had told her that <Lead Lender> had already approved it. She said she'd talk to him the next day. (I don't know what ever became of that.)

I took pictures of the place on the way home, as needed for the appraisal review form. The place looked run-down, in no way "comparable to other buildings in town" as Goodhair had me type on the form. The laundromat part of the building appears to be closed, and the sign is half missing. The roof appears to be lower in the middle, and I could see no sign of drainage at the lowest place.

Yesterday, I finished typing up the form and attached the pictures, then returned it to Goodhair unsigned. He didn't ask, but if he does, I'll refuse to sign it. I don't want my name attached to that atrocity.

Not a bad prospect. I am not afraid. In the meantime, let me close my eyes and sense the beauty around me. And take that breath under the dark sky full of stars. Breathe in. Breathe out. That's all."

I agree, now there's proof he's writing questionable loans.

I'm hoping someone higher up notices this and starts asking a lot of questions that should have been asked long ago...

Yeah, I'd like to see him reprimanded for this, but I don't hold onto any hope for it. He's good friends with the bank president, so he can get away with a lot of shady things.

Is there a board of directors or outside auditors? An anonymous tip to them may tip off an investigation.

There's a board of directors, but I have no idea who they are. The only outside auditors, that I know of, would be state or federal examiners. They do look very closely at loans made to employees and relatives of employees.

I'm basically in CYA mode with this guy. I'll do the paperwork that he requests, as long as my name isn't on it. Something's going to bite him in the butt eventually, and I don't want to get caught up in it.

Maybe an anonymous tip to one of those outside auditors might be in order. A loan based on an out of date appraisal, particularly if it's for significantly more than the property is really worth, AND made to relatives.... it's awfully suspicious. I have a feeling the state or federal auditors might be REAL interested in this guy's activities.

And CYA isn't strong enough advice. Make sure you document EVERYTHING, including who you speak to - times, dates, all of it. Guys like this schmoe tend to take others with them when it when they flame out, and what worries me the most is how everyone is IGNORING the signs.

Yep-document everything.Sometimes having in writing will point out how daft some of his things are-or raise up the flags...'Mr.Goodhair approved Customer X for a loan of $Y. Customer's credit score is [AWFUL]-customer has no history at this bank, but is recommended by Mr.Goodhair' 'Mr.Goodhair approved loan for Customer Y for this property(picture of ruin).Clients are Mr.Goodhair's daughter-and-son-in-law.'
Good on you for not initialling anything-it seems like he'd be the sort to take you down by saying that Ghel's the one who signed off on everything,so it was her responsibility...

Actually, given that the higher-ups at the bank are ignoring his actions, and that he got the job by being buddy-buddy with the bank president, I fear that when Mr. Goodhair is finally given the heave-ho, the same higher-ups who ignored him will start looking for someone to blame. "How did this happen?! WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL US ABOUT THIS?!" Documentation that Ghel tried to warn people will help insure that SHE isn't the one in the cross hairs of a corporate witch hunt.

People like Mr. Goodhair destroy all they touch and then just motor on, leaving chaos and misery in their wake. I'm willing to bet that's exactly what happened at his last job.

I suspect this is the case. He hasn't exactly been clear on why he left/was let go from his last job. IIRC, he said something about him and the board of directors having a difference of opinion. Perhaps it was a difference of opinion on the quality of some of the loans he's booked.

I keep emails far longer than I should. I just created a folder for the stuff of Goodhair's that's questionable. I can also scan and email to myself paperwork that he gives me to do, documenting who I voiced my reservations to (usually my boss). That should make for a good record, so it doesn't come back to bite me.

This is an excellent idea. When Goodhair crashes and burns you don't want to be implicated in this Hindenburg!

Yep. It's a couple levels down in my email folders and labeled something unassuming, where nobody would find it unless specifically looking for it.

Fair word of warning based on a recent experience if mine. Send those emails to an outside source, such as a personal account and/or print them off and keep a paper record. I had a bunch of emails saved pertaining to an ongoing situation at my work and when they migrated our email recently, every email I had that was older than two months was gone, unrecoverable.
