She was a hoarder, yet she saw nothing wrong with getting rid of my toys by shipping them to her relatives in the middle of nowhere <_< (that could be why I started developing minor hoarding tendencies when I finally got all my stuff out of there)
Makes sense. Self-defense to keep what's yours yours.

From the PDF, I'm mostly a 1.5? Some things push into 2 territory, but only periodically. I'm a lazy floor-cleaner, so our floor tends to collect dust bunnies and such in the corners before I get around to sweeping/vaccuuming, and we have seasonal fruit fly problems that we can only seem to triage, not completely prevent. No blocked accesses or unusable rooms, though. The worst spots are my craft area (don't have a dedicated room for it yet since we're in a 2-bedroom apartment at the moment) and one corner of my bedroom. I'm just a pack rat, though, not what I would consider a proper hoarder, and on top of that I'm lazy.

I get my pack rat tendencies from my mother. She and I both like doing a lot of different crafts, and hang onto just about anything we can find that could be used for crafting, although we periodically sort it and at least try to keep it neatly stored. One reason I don't consider myself a hoarder is the fact that I am actually quite capable of going through my stash and purging stuff that isn't useful after all, or is better off getting rid of. Also, I frequently get bit by the "clean it up!" bug and have to straighten/organize things for a while. I like collecting craft stuff, but dangit, I like being able to get to it too.

SmileyEagle, we all have issues and problems and I don't think you should be ashamed in the least. As others have said, many times these conditions run in families or are triggered by traumatic events. Some are able to move forward and some aren't. I applaud you for your efforts and I am sorry that some people can't just focus on their own problems and stop putting other people down for theirs.
QFT. Everybody has a few skeletons in their closets. Cutting someone else down really doesn't make a person look any better. Don't let that jackass get to you; you did the right thing by telling him to go pound sand.
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

If there's anything that being that this board has taught me, it's that whining to Corporate like a little bitch will make you RICH assholes will be assholes. Treat them as such, I can guarantee you that they deserve it ^_^

        -----------------

It did occur to me that part of my own inherited tendency towards being a hoardling is the whole "out of sight, out of mind" thing. Maybe a good old-fashioned, out-of-style Studio apartment is the way to go, as I would have to LOOK at all of my crap, all the time that way, thus giving me a major incentive to never let it get too bad.

By the scale, before we moved we were between I and III overall. Two people with packrat tendancies moving into an apartment together, with one having depression and migraines, and the other with an exhausting job. He'd always be 'too tired' and I'd either not feel up to the effort or thinking 'why do I have to do all of it myself?'

Structure/zoning - We were a I, but only because I kept clear pathways for movement from room to room.

Pets - Again, a I. We take care of our fuzzy attention hogs better than we do ourselves, most of the time.

Household function - Between II and III. For example, you could get to the computers but not the bookshelves, you could get to the bed but not the dressers, you could use the sink in the bathroom but not find anything on the counter, the couch and TV but not not the rest of the room. The dining room was a total loss. I usually kept the curtains closed because I didn't want the neighbors seeing the condition of our apartment.

Sanitation & cleanliness - Solidly a III, which occasionally I managed to get down to a II. Dishes were generally piled high, I could not move enough clutter off the carpets to vaccuum, I could not reach the shelves to dust. The kitchen and bathroom were where I was most effective at cleaning, but it tended to be in waves. I'd make it spotless, then let it get horrible again.

Now I've got a new apartment which is getting unpacked VERY slowly because it's easier to just leave stuff in boxes and ignore it. I need to kick that "why do I have to do it all" attitude. After all, the hubby can be guilted into cleaning if I do enough of it for him to notice. I've got a semester off of school, so I've got plenty of free time. I just have to DO it.
It's little things that make the difference between 'enjoyable', 'tolerable', and 'gimme a spoon, I'm digging an escape tunnel'.

As a slight off topic to this thread (hey, it's my thread and I can derail it if I want )
I'm also watching paranormal state, and apparently a messy house makes you more vulnerable to the demonic... yay me

Paranormal State are a bunch of idiots (even mom thinks the show is dumb), at least procedure-wise.

Come to think of it, there was at least one bad thing in my grandparents' house, but I never got the chance to investigate before the place was sold. Although it's a bit sad that the "lady in black" (we think she was a nanny for the original landowners, might explain why she took a shine to me as a pup) might have gotten displaced when the new owners demolished half the house.

As for clutter attracting the supernatural -- I can see that. We've had a ghost in the attic we call The Colonel since before we moved in. He's most noticeable when he clomps around up there in the middle of the night -- with nobody else in my side of the house and the neighbors either on vacation or their side vacant; the only access to the attic is on my side anyway.

Nekojin & I have put all the stuff we don't know what to do with in the garage. We didn't look at it, and a good chunk is still in the bags we brought with us when we moved into the apartment 4+ years ago.

Every Sunday, we're going to do the dusting and sweeping, then drag a bag or three into the house and go through it. Then, after we've finished our weekly chores, we're going to take ourselves out to dinner.

More stuff can gather more 'energy,' but more vulnerable to the demonic? That line alone makes me think the show is unwatchable except to mock.

I suppose I could have tried something that would work out to be something like QFT Squared, but I don't think I'm allowed; my math skills aren't really strong enough to get away with XKCD humor ~_~

Generally, yeah. Ghost Hunters is the only show of that type officially allowed in the house (they use common sense on investigations; I think the dorks on Paranormal State go in expecting a ghost/demon/etc so of course that's what they find). PS's methods are also questionable.

Questionable as they may be... it's still amusing to watch them stumbling in the dark.
And they still make a valid point (well, maybe not an accurate one, but valid) that disorder in your life will invite in negative energies, even if that doesn't mean having a messy house will lead to you having a demonic possession, it still is good advice to keep an orderly and calming environment around yourself.

Though it is fun watching the show and criticizing it when they do things like "we're going to do this again and see if we get the same results on this heat sensing camera"... umm, why are you using the same camera, shouldn't you try a different camera and see if you get the same results... getting the same results twice from the same equipment doesn't rule out the possibility of equipment malfunction, just that the malfunction is consistent, you need a second piece of equipment to verify to rule that out.

I gave up on Ghost Hunters early on when they made a this huge deal about catching a glowing ball on camera "that has no obvious explanation!" Any good country boy could tell it was a big mayflypassing through the beam of a flood light in the background.

Makes me wonder if they'd run screaming from the demonic event of a stag beetle landing on their shirt.
