  • Oh yes, it is most definitely all in the muscles. I have to keep a strict watch on my knees, tricky bastards that they are.

I think, for now, at least, it's going to be Cardio 2-3 times a week, and the rest of the time, something low impact and less intense, like yoga or pilates. Something that'll still burn calories, but not torture me quite so much...

Doing good on food so far. Breakfast was less than 300 calories. Bowl of cereal, yogurt and a cup of cinnamon vanilla coffee. yum. Right now, I"m munching on some cherry tomatoes. Tomatoes are my favorite. I could eat them every day.

    • I would consider a walk every day after dinner or something. Yoga and pilates don't burn what you might think. They're great for flexibility and strength, but not for calorie burning.

Kudos to you on seeking the 'lifestyle change' rather than the 'diet'. That's the right mentality!

Has everyone heard of www.sparkpeople.com? It's the site I use. Free, and it has food and exercise trackers to help keep you on your goals.

Yes, I had considered walking or cycling or something, however...

I'm a bit of a klutz. So, flexibility, balance and strength are all things I could use some work on. (Seriously, I've been known to fall down gloriously and wound myself creatively by doing nothing more simple than walking on a flat surface...)

But thanks for the info on calorie burning. didn't think into checking that.

And definitely going to consider the link. I WAS looking at CalorieKing, but they charge you for joining. Blech.

I've started an Excel program with different worksheets. One for weights and measures (I'm more focused on losing inches, than pounds, but I still want to keep track) One worksheet for a food log, gonna track it and see where my weaknesses are, and one that lists the activities/excercise I took part in during the day. If I can find my pedometer, I'll even be able to start tracking how many steps a day I walk. I used to be really motivated with that thing, just to watch the numbers climb!

Right now, though, a brief bout of stretching to keep my muscles from complaining TOO terribly at me, and then mixing stuff up to cook in the crockpot over night, for lunch/dinner tomorrow. (provencal style beef stew. Only 271 calories per serving. REALLY tasty with a fields green salad and italian vinaigrette. om nom nom!)

        • So good lord I need my head read!

I was having coffee with a super fit, uber athletic friend of mine (last year she moved house and then went and played a game of baseball.....) yesterday and she mentions a 10k fun run on April 19th.

One of her friends had wanted to run with her but pulled out at the last minute.... so I open my big fat mouth and say

"oh a 10k that doesn't sound so bad, that would be fun"

so now I am in a 10k fun run in 16 days, 21 hours and 46 minutes. My total experience running up until today (apart from the elliptical which is not really running) is running for the bus or towards candy.

I am going out tonight to get a new running bra (Ive dropped a size now) and new running shoes as my little toe is poking through the old ones. We have a 3.5K loop around a park 5 minutes walk from us so we will be training using that every night until we go.
Tonight we are looping it 3 times just walking/running to see how fit/unfit I am.

          Lordy what have I done!

          • Heheheh. I'm pretty sure you'll be fine, whether you make it all the way at a run or not. Those fun runs are filled with walkers too. Is she hoping you'll run "with" her or just be there? Because if she's used to running she's going to have to really tame it down if she wants to stay with you the whole way around. Three weeks can get you to doing it, but not up to her level.

Now, don't go running that track every day! Honestly you'll wear yourself out. You need rest as part of your running plan.

Try running it every second day, maybe twice around on weekends. Initially use a walk/run combination and just try to get more time running, less time walking, as you train. Don't try initially to run that whole 3.5k all at once.

And remember - food makes a MAJOR difference to your running ability.

            • Yup K went out and got me protien powder for blueberry milkshakes for after the run. He is always on at me to eat more protien.

Oh believe me I am NOT going to be trying to run the whole thing! God I would be dead before I was halfway done one lap!

We walk this park everynight in summer and round trip its about 4k so its really only doing that twice at once so I feel safe that I wont drop dead. Tonight we are just going to drive there (so we can calculate distance more accurately) and go around three times. Running as much as we can, walking the rest.

My partner in crime is also 5 months pregnant so she wont be running much.... thats so embarressing that a woman who is pregnant is fitter than me *dies*.

              • Today's fun came from the container. However, I forgot to turn my heart rate monitor into the recording position until I was an hour in, and it reckoned 35 minutes for 262 calories. I reckon I'd have done about 750 to 800 total in those two hours total.

We wont have time to do the outdoor training today because we have to buy shoes so I thought I might as well get some cardio in anyway. Cant hurt.

MMMM I had my first necterine of the year just now, liquid sunshine!

                  • Rota for next week due to holidays is tight, so I'm booked for fourteen hours of overtime. This means I won't have the chance to exercise as much as I'd like, but most of my rota is for warehouse work. I'm going to be knackered with no real weight loss to show for it!

Will hit hill probably tonight and probably Sunday. Tonight is mostly because that dessert today was nice. Very nice.

                    • Got dropped off at a bus stop farther away from home than usual yesterday, for the sole purpose of walking home.

No chance for exercising today, or tonight, as I've got company coming over, but tomorrow, I plan on riding my bike, and possibly more cardio.

Food control is getting better, though I really REALLY want a milkshake right now for some strange reason...

Still cant' find my pedometer, and I really want to start logging # of steps per day.

                      • Bugger. Had an extra half day of easy overtime thrust into my lap and ended up eating a chicken burger on the company account. Oh well, got some in early this week, but not sure I'll get any more for a few days.

                        • Some of you may be suprised to hear I joined a gym.

Well, I have, and today (my induction) was written my programme (sp?). 3k run I managed in 20mins (or so), by week six the instructor reckons I'll be doing 5k

I've been given a weights routine too, which nearly killed me. Note to self, keep fluid up steadily during the routine, don't dump them all at once! I'll be taking a water bottle with me on Sunday (I aim to go alternate days to do this). I last went to a gym 6 years ago, and it really showed with the weights .

Sorry to dissapoint and all, but not with my body type! (tall and skinny) There will be an increase in muscle strength (which is what I'm after) but not mass I'm afraid.

                              • This week has not been good. I served Jury Duty and the gym is a good distance from where I spent my time. I never made it over, and due to the lack of refrigeration I bought my lunches in the cafeteria all week too. I'll see what the scales show me on Monday.
