  • So OMG just a theory on Jack Vs The Face of Boe with a dash of River:

    The Vortex thingy.

River buys it off the Blue guy, who says he got it off a dead Time Agent.

Blue Guy also works with the Headless Monks from time to time

The Face of Boe is a head in a Jar, and is HOLY CRAP OLD

Captain Jack is/was known as the Face of Boe

    Captain Jack "can't" die.

Captain Jack is also a Time Agent.

      You left one out:

"Captain Jack will get you high tonight..."

And seriously, I know that Arthur and Karen have officially left the show, but they've still got 40+ years left of life, and why can't the Doctor visit from time to time, even if off-camera? Let them go on occasional adventures, then drop them off. Just like before, except lack of Brians to come home to. (And maybe the Doctor could bring Brian along to visit once in a while, They could call that "The Visitation 2: Electric Timey-Wimey".)
Why do they make Superglue but not Batglue?

See previous comments in this thread on this point. Remember how difficult it was for them to land in 1938 NYC in the Tardis? Because of how the Tardis is grown/built/designed/used, she is intimately tied in with timespace, and cannot go anywhere she'd cause an irreparable paradox. Because we know how Amy and Rory's story ends (due to the gravestone), going back in time would alter a fixed point, which would cause a paradox, which could destroy the universe.

The reason River is exempt is because she uses a Vortex Manipulator. Which slips through backdoors and ripped screens, allowing her to get into places that the Tardis can't go. And before you ask, no, she can't take them back with her. It's been established a few times that Vortex Manipulators are only good for one-person trips. Add in River's understanding of wibbly-wobbly-timey-wimey stuff, and there you have it.

Actually, the Vortex Manipulator CAN be used for multi-person trips.

Tenth, Jack, and Martha escaped from the heat-death of the universe back to the present day using Jack's VM after Simm's Master stole the TARDIS.

Eleventh was perfectly willing to transport himself and Plastic Rory back to the present after the time collapse using River's VM-- although Rory opted to stay to guard the Pandorica instead.

River used her VM to get Amy and Rory back home after Eleventh left them at Demon's Run.

I know what you're thinking. You're thinking that the VM can't be used to get through the temporal distortions around 1938 Manhattan, but I say to you, if the VM can be used to transport around the whole of space and time when time was in the middle of a total collapse (see "The Big Bang"), then it's safe enough to use it to get through those temporal distortions.

The only reason The Doctor can't go see Amy & Rory is because he loves them too much to leave them to die there. If he were to go see them, he'd feel compelled to save them, but the paradox involved in doing so would rip apart New York-- and probably other parts of reality as well. He knows the risks involved in meddling with a fixed point-- history started disintegrating the last time that happened. ("The Wedding of River Song")

          • Hrm. I could have sworn I remember, in the first episode with Barrowman, him saying that the Manipulator only carried one.

But, con man. Could be lying.

It was, indeed, used to transport them back after the Tardis was stolen... because the Doctor fixed it. Who knows what sorts of things he did to it, there.

Plastic Rory could be considered a thing, rather than a person. We don't quite know where Autons fall on the spectrum, especially Autons with souls.

*goes to watch the Demon's Run bit again, as she doesn't remember that happening*

And I'm going to respectfully disagree with you on your reasoning around the Doctor not being able to go back. The Tardis had enough trouble getting back the first time, and that was with help, and with the paradox not being a fixed-point paradox. Though I think we're saying the same thing, only you're saying "won't" and I'm saying "can't." Which is enough of a nitpick that I'm going to leave it be.

The Doctor has meddled with fixed points before. See: The Waters of Mars. But it always resolves itself, even if not quite in the original manner. Moffatt played with that concept in a beautiful way, here.

              • The doctor was able to adjust Jack's manipulator to carry three at once. Jack comments that he's still aging just not dying, we have no idea what that would do to his body. His body may have atrophied at some point and was removed and the different chemicals in his bottle could have caused his head to grow. Hell am I the only one who remembers what's her name that was just a piece of skin with a face? And honestly it's a prophecy, Jack may have written it himself.

                    • Spoiler: The Ponds died in their 80s according to the grave stone. The only fixed point is that the Ponds are buried in New York.

Now why can't they visit LA and meet the Doctor? The Doctor is apparently capable of taking them away from their lives and returning them to the same spot.
Why can't the Doctor pick them up from the UK before they visit Manhattan? Although mixed up timelines only seem to apply to River.

There is already a potential paradox because the post-Manhattan Ponds potentially live at the same time as the pre-Manhattan Ponds.

                      • Yeah. that was my question.
I mean really, why can't they just walk OUT of New York? TAke a bus, skydive, go visit their grandparents and just call the doctor to pick them up? It's New York that's the issue, not the entire time period

I loved the episode, great emotion, wonderful character development, but I think Moffett is too keyed in to making characters vanish forever from the show.

                        • I think it has become a bit expected that previous cast turn up now and again. I guess maybe the Moff wants to avoid that. Of course, like Rose's return, he could be saving it for a BIG story.

Given that time seems to be in danger of collapsing or disintegrating or cracking to pieces every season finale these days, I think it's entirely possible that they'll be able to pop in for specials and finales, then get whisked back to avoid triggering paradoxes.

I just don't understand why they had to write the Ponds out so PERMANENTLY. Rose Tyler went to an alternate dimension, and SHE still came back!
I could have sworn that when Rose left the show, it was written as a permanent thing where he could never ever see her again but later it changed?

                              • I highly doubt the Ponds are never gonna be seen again.

We have the 50th Anniversary coming up, after all, and if they don't bring the Ponds back in some fashion for that, it will be a CRIMINAL oversight.
